By Frank Maponya

A police investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of two young Limpopo girls, whose bodies were found in the veld this week – nearly three weeks after they went missing.

The bodies of seven-year-old Kamogelo and her five-year-old sister Tshegofatso Raphasha, of Marobjane village, were discovered in a decomposed state by a passer-by in the veld near Ga-Mashalane village on Tuesday. They had been missing since August 23, the day they were last seen walking with their aunt, who suffers from a mental illness. Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said an inquest docket had been opened to establish the circumstances surrounding the girls’ death. Provincial MEC for transport and community safety Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has called for a swift probe into the mystery deaths.

Blouberg local municipality mayor Maseka Pheedi, who visited the bereaved Raphasha family on Wednesday, said they were working together with the family in preparation of the funeral of the children.

The incident follows another the grim discovery recently of three children whose bodies were found floating in a river at Phooko village outside Dennilton, near Groblersdal. The bodies of siblings nine-year-old Nonjabulo and her younger brother eight-year-old Themba Ngomane as well as that of a neighbour Katlego Sibande, 15, were discovered on September 7, floating in the Mohlabetse River. They were last leaving their homes on August 30 to school, but never returned. Police believed the children may have been kidnapped as they were allegedly seen boarding a white Toyota Avanza before the gruesome discovery a week later.
