EXPEDITION: The odyssey is to showcase a vehicle they proud of in a series of immersive events literally all the way to Cairo
By Motoring Reporter
A convoy of Nissan Navara pick-ups, representing the entire range that is manufactured in South Africa, left Rosslyn plant in Pretoria, Nissan’s African LCV manufacturing hub, Wednesday on the first leg of an eight country odyssey into the interior of Africa and ultimately Cairo.
The expedition, dubbed Daring Africa 2024, proves the boast that this range of Nissan Navaras has been built to withstand the most severe road conditions in Africa. It also celebrates a wonderful legacy, says Nissan South Africa Managing Director Maciej Klenkiewicz. “These Navaras, all new and built of more, have been made for Africa by African hands that care in the very same place that the first Nissan vehicle was built in Africa more than 60 years ago.”
The factory in Rosslyn, says Nissan Africa managing director Sherief Eldessouky, is an enduring symbol of Nissan’s ties to South Africa and Africa as a whole. “We are very proud of our history and of the multi-generational relationship that we have been privileged to create between employees and customers since we started, both here and across the continent.”
Rosslyn has evolved into Nissan’s LCV manufacturing hub for Africa, with the Navaras that are built here sold across Africa and, since the end of last year, in the new markets of Algeria and Libya. Soon, the vehicle range will be introduced to Egypt.
“We’ve dubbed this journey Daring Africa,” explains Nissan African Head of Communications and PR Ramy Mohareb, “because it really is a wonderful new chapter to Nissan Dare, last year’s celebration of Nissan’s 90th anniversary.”
The odyssey, he says is daring in so many different ways. “It allows us to showcase a vehicle that we are very proud of in a series of immersive events literally all the way to Cairo. We are proving our promise that the entire range of the Nissan Navara which we build on the continent, is equal to the severest road conditions that Africa has to offer as we connect our two manufacturing hubs on either side of the continent,” he added.
On Wednesday, the expedition accompanied by selected South African journalists overnighted at Nelspruit after visiting selected Nissan dealerships in Pretoria and Mbombela: Nissan Menlyn and Produkta Nissan en route to the Mozambique border. The next leg will see the expedition heading into Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania and Kenya, being met and accompanied by a team from each country’s media, before ending the adventure in Egypt.
Throughout their African odyssey, the Navaras will be shadowed by a Nissan X-Trail acting as an expedition support vehicle, which will also give the X-Trail an opportunity to prove its adventure credentials on some of Africa’s highways. “The Navara is a wonderful evolution of the Nissan pick-up legacy,” says Nissan Africa marketing director Stefan Haasbroek, “and this trip will show our customers and fans exactly that in real life, real-time situations as we celebrate the best that Africa has to offer.”
The vehicle is not just tropicalised for the African market, it literally has been built for market conditions, with a reinforced chassis a very different suspension and the best roll over angle in the market. “It literally is built of more,” he says.
Africa is a vital market for Nissan, says Eldessouky. The continent is regarded as the world’s last remaining automotive frontier because of the low level of vehicle ownership, which Nissan is well placed to serve through its unique manufacturing footprint in Egypt and South Africa and its wide range of mobility solutions.
“We believe in Africa, and we believe in this continent’s potential,” says Eldessouky. “Our mantra for the region is Let’s Build’ and this expedition really is proof positive of that and the opportunity that the AfCFTA holds for all of us.”

TOUGHEST DEFENDER YET
Land Rover is turning the wick up on its Defender 4×4, confirming that a new OCTA model is on the way soon. The brand describes it as the ‘toughest, most capable and luxurious’ Defender yet, and it’ll be officially revealed later in 2024. Powering the new Defender OCTA will be a twin-turbo V8 with mild hybrid assistance. No other performance specs are known yet, but the engine will likely be a BMW-derived engine and is expected to be the same one the 626bhp Range Rover Sport SV uses – a healthy 108bhp more than the Defender V8.
SAY HELLO TO LDV
South Africa is bakkie country and it makes sense that any global commercial vehicle brand worth its salt would look for a slice of the action in our market. Now there’s an all-new player entering the fray and it goes by the name of LDV expected yo go on sale in May.
It’s products hail from China but the brand does have a British back story, evolving from the UK’s Leyland DAF Vehicles, but abbreviated to LDV in modern times under the ownership of SAIC. This Chinese automotive giant also owns the MG brand, following the bankruptcy of MG Rover in 2005, and there are also rumours of that brand returning to South Africa.-IOL
PEUGEOT’S ELECTRIC 7-SEATER SUV
Peugeot has electrified the 5008 7-seater SUV, calling it the E-5008, but South Africa won’t be seeing it yet. Built around the Stellantis STLA Medium platform, the E-5008 will launch in Europe with three powertrain options, opening with two single-motor models with 157kW/345Nm and 170kW/345Nm options. Topping the range is a dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant that delivers 157kW/345Nm at the front, while the second motor provides an additional 80kW and 170Nm. Their driving range is estimated between 500km and 660km.
BYE BYE AUDI R8
THE final Audi R8 has rolled off the production line, with the iconic sports car being discontinued after 17-years – but nobody will ever drive it. Uncertainty surround the future of the type, with an electric replacement possibly in the works.
What is for sure, though, is that the Vegas Yellow R8 produced by the brand’s Stuttgart factory is the last of the internal combustion models. It boasts a growling, 612 horsepower “performance” V10 engine inside a “Quattro Edition” body that features bronze alloys and plenty of carbon fibre.

SELF-DRIVING LUXEED S7
Luxeed is a car brand jointly made by Chery and Huawei with the S7 going on sale last year. The brand uses the Huawei store network for sales.
