VIBES: SABC, Sun City fest to showcase the best of South African traditions

The inaugural Ziyakhala Mo Sun City Festival is scheduled for the Sun City on June 28. Brought by the SABC, the event rotates around traditional and cultural themes, also headlined by the presence of fashionistas.
Dubbed as groundbreaking, with the two entities, the SABC and Sun City collaborating in its presentation, the event is expected to feature in nine SABC African language stations.
Described as eclectic, Ziyakhala refers, when translated, to the notion “the play is on”, or that “things are happening” or that “the party is on”.
“In a more playful sense, it indeed implies all kinds of fun, excitement, and celebration is taking place,” says its promoters.
This is not just a festival, but “a carefully curated experience” designed to showcase the best of South Africa’s tradition and musical talent “while offering attendees an immersive and luxurious getaway”.
The festival is said to be not just a festival, but a carefully curated experience designed to showcase the best of South African tradition, culture, and musical prowess, “offering guests an immersive and luxurious getaway”.
The festival will showcase different traditional genres including but not limited to maskandi music, hip hop, isicathamiya, Afro-pop and a variety of Afro beats, among an assortment of genres on offer. The line-up includes the likes of Mthandeni-SK, Sjava, Qadasi, and Maqhinga.
SABC general manager for public service radio Thinasiphelele Sixaso says the event seeks to showcase their support and appreciation of local talent by promoting authentic South African artists that include Ringo Madlingozi, King Monada, Cassper Nyovest, Dr Nothembi Mkhwebane, Makhadzi, Lwah Ndlunkulu, Ntate Stunna, General Muzka and five-time Grammy award winners, Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
Sun City head of events Nombuso Buthelezi expressed excitement with the partnership with SABC. “This partnership will allow a seamless and authentic amalgamation of various leading voices in the entertainment space to speak directly to their audience and share their love for South African music and culture.
“The SABC is the custodian of the country’s cultural expressions and music heritage, therefore our role is to tell stories through our African language stations, which are the perfect platforms to enrich the cultural heritage of South Africa.
“We are excited that our stations play a critical role in supporting traditional artistic expressions through partnerships such as this one,” said Buthelezi.
