About  2500 braai enthusiasts who crammed into the Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria on Heritage Day  and took part in cooking almost half a ton of boerewors in South Africa’s attempt to break the Guiness  World Record, will have to wait a few weeks to establish if they had succeeded in their effort.

On a day filled with fun and music and the spirit of Proudly South African, the multiracial guests displayed the spirit of unity which South Africans so badly needed to resolve their differences and take the country forward. It was a day to remember.

Each participant received a portion of boerewors, a branded apron and a fresh roll and tongs to cook the meat across 420 custom-built braai stands across the stadium which was filled with the aroma of boerewors.

The event was sponsored by Big Save and White Star companies.

Men, women and children set out on a serious business of reclaiming the title for the World’s largest braai currently held by Ishigoki Ciy in Japan with 2220 people which they achieved in November 2023.

Heritage is a day where South Africans use to celebrate their culture and what better way to do it while trying to break the world record.

The media was hosted by White Star brand which held a cooking competition between Azania, a songstress, and hit maker and actor, Zamani Mbatha, using White Star mealie meal. As the official sponsor of the event White Star Marketing and Brand representative, Sihlonele Dangazele said they were proud to be the official partner of this historic event as there was no braai without porridge (pap).

“So, today we want to celebrate Heritage Day and we are in partnership with Big Save to attempt to break the record for the biggest braai,” said Dangazele. As a big brand associated with braai, it was a stage we wanted to be in more than anything else.

Somizi Mhlongo, actor and socialite, later announced that South Africa had reclaimed the title but this had not been verified.

Lucia Mthiyane, a celebrity chef who came as a guest but ended up being the judge for the cooking competition, said it was a great event which was well attended and greatly organised. Her memorable moment was when everyone started singing and braaing at the same time while trying to break the record.

Meanwhile, guests were kept entertained and danced along to the sounds of Mi Casa, GoodLuck, Booshle G and other artists.

Jonita Cuff, Marketing Manager of White Star, had this to say at the end of the event: “Being part of this record-breaking braai, brings our values to life. We are thrilled to offer South Africans a taste of tradition at such a memorable gathering.”
