HERITAGE: The brand’s artisanal range of luxury spirits is the product of discovery and tenacious tinkering over time…
By Len Maseko
In recent years, the South African revelry scene has witnessed a growing trend towards low and non-alcoholic drinks market.
Notably, the boom in the consumption of non-alcoholic spirits is driven by a trend by a growing health and wellness lifestyle among the younger consumers like Gen Z and Millennials.
In the milieu of this wave has come a greater demand for sophisticated and varied non-alcoholic options, like non-alcoholic gin, vodka and whisky alternatives, including other categories like wine, bubbly and ready-to-drink beverages. Thanks to a greater awareness of the risks associated with alcohol and a desire for zero-calorie or low-sugar alternatives.
The drinks sector is now responding to a trend that moves beyond basic mocktails to include complex and premium non-alcoholic spirits that mimic the taste and experience of traditional alcoholic drinks, catering to a more discerning palate.
Apparently, what ignited this trend for alcohol-free drinks that resemble the real thing began several decades ago in Finland as part of a post-World War II effort to help the Finnish public control their alcohol use. In 2013, the UK and other European countries re-launched it as a public health initiative to encourage people to take a break from alcohol, which was usually the first 31 days of the year.
Meanwhile, the South African non-alcoholic spirits market is projected to grow significantly by 2030, reaching an expected market revenue of an estimated R240 million by 2030, according to Statista. Vodka was the largest revenue-generating segment in 2024, while non-alcoholic gin is the fastest-growing segment.
Tapping into non-alcoholic gin’s growth trend, and spurred by South African consumers increasingly seeking healthier beverage options, is Cape Town-based Musgrave Spirits renowned for bequeathing South Africa with the original pink gin.
Well-known for their pioneering spirit, Musgrave now boasts a range that includes a richly aromatic gin alternative INSPIRIT, alcohol-free infusion made with 12 rare botanicals inspired by the ancient spice route of Africa. This is in addition to their original gin and pink edition, which set the tone for INSPIRIT with the formula of the aromatic blend of 12 rare botanicals.
This drink is the result of many hours of tinkering and experimenting at the Cape Town distillery, which fused elements to arrive at a point they were satisfied that it “is as good as the real thing”.
Having nosed it, and being enamoured by its whiff of bountiful aromas, the sensation of a light and elegant palate brimming botanical offerings is simply seductive. Thankfully, it derives its distinct flavours from the deft infusion of cardamom and juniper notes, complemented by African ginger, lime, and grains of paradise, which give it a surprisingly nuanced mouthfeel.
From the mid-palate romance with the taste buds, the first swig eventually ebbs into a harmonious and fragrant finish. An experience that instantly invokes that happy dilemma: nothing, indeed, is as testing to the willpower as attempting to resist a follow-up sip after the sublime first.
A sweet dilemma, indeed, since a second swig will hardly deliver one into the hazardous arms of the law at the end of that nightcap. A perpetual sting in the tale of many a night-on-the-town binges during that lone nocturnal drive back home.
Musgrave is a family business that derives its existence from the cross-seas adventure of one Maurice Boon Musgrave, who left England in 1949 bound for Africa to start a new life. Three months on a ship with a small baby, a measles outbreak and sea-sickness started an adventure that would change his life forever.
This pioneering spirit of endeavour, adventure and courage would later inspire Maurice’s granddaughter, Simone, the founder of Musgrave Spirits. She is the guardian of Maurice’s passion for the unusual.
“Musgrave Spirits are an expression of my family heritage and my story as a woman in business in Africa,” says Simone. “Our drinks also speak to my love for beautiful brands and products. Musgrave is a celebration of those moments we treasure in our memories”. INSPIRIT (750ml) retails at R269 nationwide.
