Popular radio personality Lerato Kganyago and acclaimed actor and television presenter Lawrence Maleka have been unveiled as the main hosts of the 2026 Metro FM Music Awards, set to take place at the Durban International Convention Centre on April 20.
The stylish pairing promises a vibrant mix of energy, charm and on-stage chemistry, with both hosts expressing excitement about leading one of South Africa’s biggest music nights.
Speaking to Weekly SA Mirror, Kganyago said this will mark her second time hosting the Metro FM Music Awards — a milestone she attributes to her deep connection with the station and her experience on major stages.
“I believe I was chosen because of my love for Metro FM and my understanding of the brand,” she said, adding that her previous hosting roles at the South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and SAFTAs have prepared her well for the spotlight.
Maleka, meanwhile, described his appointment as long overdue. He revealed that discussions with Metro FM had been ongoing for some time but were previously affected by scheduling conflicts.
“This has always been on the cards. I’m just grateful that this year everything aligned,” he said. “Metro has been part of my life for years, and I’m bringing pure excitement to the stage.”
What makes this hosting partnership particularly compelling is the pair’s off-screen friendship — a natural chemistry they believe will translate seamlessly on stage.
“We already have a genuine connection, so nothing will feel forced,” said Maleka, hinting at an easy, playful dynamic audiences can expect on the night.
Kganyago added that hosting a live event of this magnitude requires both courage and a touch of madness.
“You have to be a little crazy to stand in front of so many people and connect with them as if you know them,” she said. “It’s not easy — I still get nervous every time.”
The broader hosting line-up also reflects Metro FM’s effort to blend established talent with new voices. Nomuzi “Moozlie” Mabena and Siyabonga “Scoop” Ngwekazi will take charge of the Green Room, while DJ Lamiez Holworthy will host the Black Carpet, sponsored by Africa Fashion International. Zola Mhlongo will serve as the show’s voice-over artist.
Adding further prestige to the event, Grammy Award-winning producer Zakes Bantwini has been appointed as the Music Director, tasked with curating a world-class musical experience in the culturally rich setting of Durban.
The awards form part of a broader festival at Moses Mabhida Stadium, featuring a strong performance line-up including Big Zulu, Mafikizolo, Simmy, Young Stunna, DJ Tira and others, promising a full weekend celebration of South African music.
Metro FM Business Manager Kina Nhlengethwa described this year’s edition as a milestone event celebrating the station’s four decades of influence in shaping the country’s music landscape.
Voting closes on April 19, with tickets available via Computicket and Webtickets. The awards will be broadcast live on SABC 1 and streamed on SABC Plus from 20:00.
As anticipation builds, Kganyago and Maleka are calling on South Africans to come together in celebration.
“Let’s forget our problems for a moment and celebrate our talent,” they said. “This is about joy, music and unity.”
