ALL SET FOR MAAPE TO TAKE OVER PREMIERSHIP

CHANGE:North West ANC hails move as beginning of a new era

By Boitumelo Tshehle

ANC veteran and businessman Bushy Maape is expected to be nominated as the new premier of the North West next Tuesday. Maape was appointed by the ANC’s interim provincial committee two weeks after showing former premier Job Mokgoro a door.

Maape, who used to be Mokgoro’s advisor during the fifth administration, was sworn in on Wednesday as a member of the legislature. His appointment came days after he had to wait on the sidelines as Mokgoro refused to resign both as premier and member of the legislature.

A week later, after meeting with president of the country Cyril Ramaphosa, Mokgoro gave way to Maape by handing in both his resignation letters on two consecutive days. Maape said this after he was sworn in: “I have been called to serve and I am not called to serve alone, I am called to serve with others and I have agreed to make myself available,” he said.

ANC’s interim provincial committee Hlomani Chauke confirmed the occasion. “It is a celebration, but, not a celebration only, but a response of the ANC to continue in its deployment to find fine and very clear leadership that will come and help the government to deliver services to our people,” he said. He said the exercise was not just for show of support, but to confirm that the ANC was committed to deliver service to its people.
