ALL THAT GLITTERS IS GOLD FOR RESILIENT SOWETO BUSINESSMAN

Vision: Simplicity and elegance the cornerstones of the success of his business…

By Priscilla Malinga

An ambitious entrepreneur from the dusty streets of Soweto whose wish was to live in line with the adage that ‘diamonds are forever’ has accomplished his dream of owning a jewellery store.

Nqobile Nkosi, whose life has been marked by determination and opportunity, will be launching his store, ‘’ The Jewellery Village’’ at Montecasino in Johannesburg, on Thursday marking his years of hard work and visionary leadership that culminated in his dream of selling some of the world’s precious metals.

Nkosi stands out as a prominent entrepreneur in South Africa’s gold and diamond sector and has built a reputation for innovation, mentorship and community upliftment. His journey from Soweto to Montecasino is a testament to the power of determination, opportunity, and visionary leadership. Poverty failed to deter him from his ambition.

Born and raised in Soweto, his early life was marked by resilience and ambition. Despite facing socio-economic challenges, he discovered a passion for craftsmanship and entrepreneurship.

As a man who believes in building the nation and empowering others, he felt the need to recruit and train fellow craftsmen from different historical backgrounds by starting the initiative called

The Jewellery Village shop based in Montecasino where all the SMME’s under his watch get to sell their products.

Known for being the first Jewellery manufacture from Soweto, he took time after noticing a lack of recognition and promotion of local talent in the jewellery sector in South Africa. He decided to come up with an idea that will promote unique, local jewellery designs and crafts. Inspired by his love for locally produced jewellery pieces, the Johannesburg-based jewellery maker has since created a name for himself locally and internationally through his craft.

He took it upon himself to develop young, talented designers providing a platform to market their unique designs in the correct fashion. Simplicity and elegance is the key cornerstone to the success of the establishment and all those who are part of it.

South Africa remains as one of the largest producers of gold, silver and platinum in the world, so it is no surprise that this country is home to a number of innovative and independent jewellery designers.

Artisans are given the opportunity to showcase their manufacturing skills and items at the store, creating a space for new talent and filling in the gaps in the industry – working with up-and-coming SMMEs to guide them through their journey.

The refinery’s programme offers mentorship hands- on from the industry experts which covers business aspects including marketing, operations and financial management among others.

Business funding is also made available to assist the businesses with the expansion and sustainability.

What makes the programme special though is the accessto raw material such as gold and silver.

At this week’s opening of the new store,  items influenced by African flair will be displayed as a celebration of local craftsmanship.

“ It could be a dramatic neckpiece that will surely turn heads or a contemporary accessory that will go well with any planned outfit, “says Nkosi.

Commissions available at the store will include but not limited to earrings, pendants, rings and a variety of stones like black pebbles and diamonds.
