Football legend Johannes “Big Boy” Kholoane is at the centre of a bitter controversy over unexplained expenses linked to the finances of the Soweto Masters and Legends Association, of which he is a long-serving treasurer.

The former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker – prolific in his days – has apparently not been forthcoming with an explanation to fellow members about a litany of “questionable expenses’’ incurred with organisational finances.

Weekly SA Mirror has seen the association’s spread sheet which details how Kholoane allegedly spent the “unauthorised” funds during March 30 and May 14 in 2022, on petrol and groceries etc.

According to chairman Finky “Mathousand” Sekete, the unauthorised expenditure amounted to R8 431,00.

When approached, Kholoane declined to comment, saying he will make time for Weekly SA Mirror “sometime during the week”.

“I am attending a funeral ..can’t speak now,” he said.

Sekete claimed there was a further amount of R168 000 which Kholoane  and other amounts (about R22 000) still has to explain, allegedly booked to have been paid for members’ funerals during the recent stringent Covid-19 restrictions.

The association pays R1 000 towards burial costs of a member and according to Sekete they lost less than seven members during Covid times.

“We don’t know how he arrived at R22 000,” he said.

As if it were not enough, the association has been slapped with a R16 750 fine by SARS for failing to submit their returns on time, a responsibility of Kholoane as the accounting officer.

Sekete further mentioned that the association will be sending a letter to Kholoane, asking him to repay the monies or face the music.

“We will give him seven days to respond and we will take it from there,” he said.

Kholoane has been serving as treasurer for the association since 2014, formed to unite former footballers and involve them in various programmes which include to fully support football development programs at schools and community clubs using the expertise and knowledge of the game etc.
