WINDING DOWN: Durban City looks set to for automatic promotion whatever outcome against Cape Town Spurs on Sunday
By Masoja Cele
The curtain will fall on Sunday on the Motsepe Foundation Championship. The title scale is tilted in favour of KZN side Durban City based on their points tally and better goal difference over second place Orbit College FC.
On Sunday Durban City (As the team is now known after changing from Maritzburg United) will take a long trip to Cape Town to face strug- gling Cape Town Spurs in their final fixture of the season.
Curiosity to this mouth watering match is the distinct position between the two teams. Mean- while, City are sitting on top of the log, Spurs are placed uncomfortable second from the bottom of the table. Despite losing 2-1 against Milford FC a week back, they came back highly motivated ver-sus Black Leopards last Sunday emerging 3-2 vic-torious.
Seeking only a point at Spurs to be crowned 2024/25 Championship winners, Simo Dladla’s boys are leading the race with 55 points and with a goal-difference of 20.
While, hot on their heels is Orbit College who are second with 52 points and with 14 goal difference. Even if City lose in Cape Town they will still be crowned the Championship conquerors. Not unless College can score 6 or 7 goals against the already relegated Leruma United on Sunday at home in Olympia Park Rustenburg.
The Team of Choice technical team led by coach Dladla will hope that players like Ruzaigh Gamaldien, Saziso Magawana, Joslin Kamatuka and Samkelo Maseko will carry the form they dis- played against Leopards to Urban Warriors back- yard.
The combination of Gamaldien and Kamatu- ka always intimidate defenders with their rigorous style of attack. Kamatuka scored an overhead goal against Lidoda Duvha that could have made many Betway Premiership strikers to look with envy.
Starring the relegation with a aching eye Spurs could be dangerous to play at this stage. Though they are hovering in the drop zone they could still avoid the chop if they win against City. The Urban Warriors are par on points with Venda FC.
They both have 30 points with the Limpopo side above because of a better goal difference. Should Spurs win or draw against City which is possible and Venda FC go down to Kruger United in Nelspruit then the Western Cape team will survive the axe. Another team who is also in the mix of the relegation quagmire is Upington City. They are just 2 points above Spurs and Venda FC.
The Urban Warriors will fight tooth and nail to save their status from plummeting down to the ABC Motsepe League. If the Urban Warriors nurse any hope upsetting the KZN side then their de- fence manned by former Orlando Pirates defender Tshepho Gumede, Jarrod Moroole and Siviwe Nkwali will need extra energy to thwart dangerous build-ups from the opposition. While the two front men Therlo Moosa and Asanele Velebhayi will have to sharp as a razor blade if they harbor to brigde City’s defence and goalkeeper Ayanda Mtshali.
With the season winding down fans are in for an intriguing battle as both teams badly need the points at stake for different reasons.
