The South African music industry’s yearly event – the METROFM Music Awards – have kicked off to set the stage for a long process of nominations.
The Metro’s, hosted by the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) biggest commercial radio station, have once again partnered with the Mpumalanga provincial government and the Motsepe Foundation.
The last event took place at Mbombela Stadium in April and was an extravagant affair that attracted hordes of artists and music fans from other regions.
Although the Mpumalanga Tourism is part of the sponsors, it is still not clear if the ceremony will again be taking place at the same venue as all will be announced at the nominees’ announcement event to be announced early next year.
Kina Nhlengethwa, METRO FM’s business manager, says they are thrilled to open entries for the 2025 METRO FM Music Awards, especially after an incredible year of vibrant music released during commemorations of the 30 years of democracy.
“Unlike the previous years, where we started with the launch of the awards and only then opened the entries, this year we have decided to provide more time to allow the eligible artists to make their submissions,” says Nhlengethwa. “We can’t wait to see the submissions and celebrate the best of SA music,” he added.
All eligible artists wishing to form part of the awards are requested to submit their entries from December 1 2024. The process will be open until February 2 2025. To be eligible for entry, all recorded albums, singles, and recordings must have been released between February 28 2024 and February 28 2025.
The entry guidelines, general rules and regulations are available on the METRO FM website, where entries can also be submitted. The top five nominees per category will be announced at the nominees’ announcement event scheduled to take place in February, prior to the main awards ceremony.
