The 36-year-old victim was stabbed with a broken beer bottle at a liqour outlet in Majeje village, near Lulekani, outside Phalaborwa. It is alleged the incident happened after the man’s girlfriend received a tip-off last Saturday that her boyfriend was in the company of another woman and she immediately rushed to the scene.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said an argument ensued between the man and the suspect, after which he was stabbed with a broken beer bottle. The woman later handed herself over to police at Namakgale. The suspect, Juscah Mheleni, 23, has been remanded in custody.
Meanwhile, social development MEC Nkakareng Rakgoale said she was disappointed that such an incident happened at a time when the country was commemorating Women’s Month.
“It is very disturbing to still learn about incidents of gender-based violence during the month of August, including at any other time. Gender-based violence is not exclusively perpetrated against women.
Women of today must emulate the women of 1956 and resolve disputes in a more peaceful manner,” Rakgoale said. – Frank Maponya
