PILGRIM’S REST – Police have vowed to continue with operations following the arrest of several illegal miners last Friday.
This comes two weeks after an operation conducted in the historic tourist town proved that Zama-Zamas who were armed to the teeth, were a real threat to the province’s security and had ultimately disrupted tourism activity in the town – its such a relief that as Tourism Month arrived, the security struck in the nip of time to save the situation to allow its usual activities to go ahead.
However, a search by the South African National Defence Force with the police, led to the arrest of illegal miners as well as Mozambican nationals who were caught without proper documentation.
Various concerns have been raised regarding the Illegal mining activities taking place, but authorities have made it clear that it is not the end yet.
Acting Provincial Commissioner, General Zeph Mkhwanazi said although last week’s operation yielded positive results, there are many lawless issues that need to be dealt with.
“We still need to come back because there is a lot to be done. In terms of successes, we managed to make some arrests and confiscated items. These people occupying this space will realize the seriousness of Operation Vala Umgodi because we will be back,” he said.
Premier Mandla Ndlovu, who was accompanied by MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie, added that the perception of government not taking charge against illegal miners should be wiped out.
He expressed satisfaction with the results of the operation stating that Zama-Zama’s will be dealt with accordingly. “This is a clear warning to these people who decided to leave their own countries to come and terrorize our people.
Already crime is prevalent in this province and with these illegal activities, tourists will no longer feel safe. We will deal with crime. Sekwanele, siyabopha here in Mpumalanga,” said Ndlovu.
Macie said more unannounced visits will be made to the area in order to achieve the goal.
“This is an ongoing process, but we will reclaim this place and get rid of Zama-Zamas,” vowed Macie.- Mpumalanga Mirror
