Johannesburg, South Africa — The Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA) has announced that the late Solomon Majafela Molokoane, affectionately known as Solly Moholo, will be posthumously awarded the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the SAMA31 hybrid ceremony taking place on December 14.
A towering figure in traditional South African gospel music, Moholo captivated audiences for more than two decades with his electrifying mokhukhu gospel style, vibrant stage presence and uplifting message of faith, hope and community. With over 15 albums and a career that resonated far beyond South Africa’s borders, he leaves behind a legacy that continues to inspire.
Moholo rose to national prominence in the early 2000s with his seminal album Ba Mmitsa Tsotsi, cementing himself as one of the most influential voices in the genre. Proudly rooted in Soshanguve and the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) tradition, he masterfully fused spiritual devotion with township rhythm, brass-band vibrancy and the unforgettable energy of mokhukhu dance — transforming gospel into a celebration embraced by audiences across generations.
His unforgettable live performances ignited stages from South Africa to Swaziland and Botswana, while offstage he distinguished himself as a passionate advocate for social upliftment.
Moholo was deeply committed to fighting bullying among young people, frequently visiting schools to motivate learners and promote kindness, courage and self-worth. He also championed the empowerment of children living with disabilities, offering support, encouragement and a message of dignity and hope.
“Solly Moholo did not just perform gospel music — he lived it, breathed it, and made an entire nation dance to its truth,” said Nhlanhla Sibisi, CEO of RiSA.
“He took sacred songs from the church to the streets and showed us that joy, faith and culture can coexist in the most powerful way. Even though he left us in 2024, his voice continues to uplift and inspire. This Lifetime Achievement Award is RiSA’s heartfelt tribute to a true South African music icon whose legacy will resonate for generations.”
SAMA31 is presented in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, SAMPRA, SAMRO, CAPASSO, YouTube, the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, and media partner SABC. Together, these partners underscore the awards’ enduring commitment to excellence and cultural celebration.
The South African Music Awards continue to champion inclusivity, diversity and artistic innovation across all genres.
While trophies will be awarded this December, the true celebration lies in the extraordinary journeys of South African artists whose work defines the nation’s ever-evolving musical identity.
As Sibisi affirms: “Less Noise. More Music — because in a country this vibrant, the music must always speak loudest.”
