Durban-born Mbongeni Ngema undeniably lived a colourful life, making the world of showbiz his oyster throughout the four decades that spanned his illustrious acting and playwright career. The swashbuckling thespian, who died in an accident a fortnight ago, was buried in his native coastal city last Friday, amid a ceremony which drew scores of showbiz luminaries from local and abroad. A week earlier, Soweto bid farewell to one of its football legends, James ‘Mebra’ Gqosha, former Pimville United Brothers and Orlando Pirates fullback, who passed away on December 29. The who’s who of the soccer tribe and other household names attended the funeral. They included George More, George Makapan, JackieMasike, Kagiso Mogale, Johannes “Big Boy” Kholoane, Ntsie Rapodile, Ntsie Maphike, Steven Sekano, Eugene Zwane, Buddha Mathathe, Rio Mkhabela, George Tshabalala – as well as veteran actor and community leader Mabutho Kid Sithole.
