SPORTS: BRIEFS

Proteas

Kagiso “KG” Rabada seems to be serenely entering the club of mean South African bowlers who are delighted by five-wicket hauls in test matches.

This was the case when he recorded his 10th five-wicket haul at the expense of West Indies.

His achievement greatly helped the Proteas to beat their hosts in the first test by an innings and 63 runs to lead the two-match series 1-0 in St Lucia last week.

This feat by Mzansi’s fast bowler Rabada (26) places him seventh in a list of cricketers whom one them, Hugh “Toey” Tayfield, thrilled the fans as early as 1949.

Here’s the list of the top seven South African bowlers with 10 or more five-wicket takings in a match:

1 –   Dale Steyn in 93 matches, 3101.2 overs, 439 wickets, 26 five-wicket haul;

2 –   Alan Donald in 72 matches, 2586.3 overs, 330 wickets, 20 five-wicket haul;

3 – Makhaya Ntini in 101 matches, 3472.2 overs, 390 wickets, 18 five-wicket haul;

4 – Shaun Pollock in 108 matches, 4058.5 overs, 421 wickets, 16 five-wicket haul;

5 –   Hugh Tayfield in 37 matches, 2261.2 overs, 170 wickets, 14 five-wicket haul;

6 – Vernon Philander in 64 matches, 1898.3 overs, 224 wickets, 13 five-wicket haul;

7 –   Kagiso Rabada in 46 matches, 1435.1 overs, 208 wickets, 10 five-wicket haul – wsam

United Rugby Championship

SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux has called the four South African teams’ official introduction into the PRO16 United Rugby Championship ‘a watershed moment in the country’s rugby history’.

It was announced on Tuesday morning that the new PRO Rugby competition including the four South African teams had been named the United Rugby Championship.

It was also confirmed that South Africa’s entry into the United Rugby Championship holds the prospect of the four local teams being eligible to qualify for the Champions Cup from the 2022-23 season.

Commenting on the news, Roux said: ‘South African rugby has for many years imagined a future aligned with northern-hemisphere rugby and this announcement marks the arrival of that vision. – sarugbymag.co.za

WBC heavyweight

Tyson Fury has newfound “one-punch knockout power” and promised to “run over” Deontay Wilder when they went face to face.

Fury and Wilder met at a press conference on Tuesday night ahead of their trilogy fight for the WBC heavyweight championship on July 24 in Las Vegas.

Wilder spoke only briefly to thank his legal team for enforcing this fight before donning headphones and refusing all questions to allow the shirtless Fury to make a bold prediction.

“I gave my game plan away the last time because he wasn’t good enough to do anything about it,” said Fury. “I’ll do the same thing this time. Wilder is a one-trick pony. What I’ll do this time? I’ll run him over like I’m an 18-wheeler. I guarantee he does not go past where he did before [the seventh round],” bragged Fury. – skysports.com
