STRONG WELSH TEAM FOR ‘BOKS IN JULY

Wales head coach Wayne Pivac has named a 33-man squad for the three-Test series against the Springboks in South Africa in July.

George North and Dan Lydiate return for international duty after extended periods out with injury. Ospreys teammate Sam Parry will join them in the Wales camp. Scarlets duo Johnny Williams and Rhys Patchell are also named.

There are two uncapped players: Cardiff Rugby’s James Ratti is called up after featuring in the 2022 Six Nations squad while Leicester Tigers’ Tommy Reffell is selected in a Wales squad for the first time.

The first Test is in Pretoria on 2 July, with the series continuing at Bloemfontein before finishing in Cape Town.

LGBTQ+ RIGHTS A CURVED BALL FOR PSG’S GUEYE

Paris St-Germain’s Idrissa Gueye refused to play in a match to avoid wearing a rainbow symbol in support of LGBTQ+ rights, BBC Sport understands. The 32-year-old former Aston Villa and Everton midfielder was absent from Saturday’s 4-0 win over Montpellier.

PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino said only that Senagalese Gueye missed the game for “personal reasons”. The French Football Federation (FFF) has reportedly written to Gueye to clarify why he was absent.

Homosexuality is illegal in Senegal and punishable by prison sentences of up to five years. It is also illegal in Qatar, where PSG’s owners hail from and where the men’s 2022 World Cup will be staged later this year.

EMERGENCY WARD AT KAIZER CHIEFS

Kaizer Chiefs’ doctor’s rooms are very busy this week as the team prepares for their final match of the season against Swallows FC on Saturday.

Players such as S’fiso Hlanti and Lebogang Manyama are still out due to the long-term injuries they suffered earlier in the season. They were recently joined by Keagan Dolly and Samir Nurković in the last two weeks.

This week the doctors have had to attend to Leonardo Castro who picked up an injury in the game against Sekhukhune on Saturday and Siyabonga Ngezana who is out with a hamstring injury.

Midfielders Kgaogelo Sekgota, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Sabelo Radebe did not train due to a bout of flu. Added to the team’s injury woes is Cole Alexander’s suspension.
