TRIKAMJEE BOWS OUT

SPORTS EXECUTIVE:  Founder member of SAFA and contributor to the creation of the PSL dies

By Sports Reporter

The South African Football Association (SAFA) is saddened by the passing of respected sports executive Ashwin Trikamjee.

Trikamjee passed away this week and was a prominent figure in the religious and legal communities. He also held numerous leadership roles in South African sport, including at SAFA and in the National Soccer League.

The 80-year-old passed away on Wednesday evening after losing his battle with stage 4 cancer.  SAFA President Dr Danny Jordaan mourned his passing and said the news came as a shock.

“Our sincerest condolences to former chairman of the NSL, Ashwin Trikamjee. His passing yesterday morning came as a shock,” Dr Jordaan said.

“We will remember him as a founder member of SAFA, and as part of the unity process. His contribution to the building of unity and the creation of both SAFA and the PSL will remain part of our memory. Our heartfelt condolences to the Trikamjee family. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

We as SAFA offer our deepest condolences and join in mourning the loss of Trikamjee. A moment of silence will be observed in his honour at all Betway Premiership, Motsepe Foundation Championship, and DStv Diski Challenge fixtures this weekend.

Trikamjee’s death comes shortly after the death of former Orlando Pirates chairman Bobby Makwetla who passed away last week aged 83.

Makwetla also served on the boards of Lebowa Platinum and was chair of Merafe Holdings (Pty) Ltd. He passed away last week Monday and he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Angie and their three children, Lerato, Thabang and Monareng.

He was laid to rest at Fourways Memorial Park last Friday.

May their  souls  repose peacefully.
