TV PERSONALITY GENIVER LAUNCHES MISS CAPITAL SA

ATTITUDE: The pageant aims to provide safe space where young women will learn to be independent and self-driven by their ambitions…

By CityLife Arts Reporter

The pageant Miss Capital SA is named after Pretoria as a platform to bring change and positively transform the lives of young women.

The online call for entries is still open and the pageant will take place in October in Pretoria. The entrants should be 18 of age and reside in South Africa. The closing date is May 16 2023 and there is no entry fee.

The contest is the brainchild of TV personality-cum-model Geniver Mmushi-Matsafu, who resides in Pretoria, from which the pageant derives its name.

“Miss Capital City SA is a national beauty pageant in South Africa that selects the representative of SA Capital Cities and also Ambassadors in different provinces, thereby creating a sense of purpose and self-worth in our country`s youth. It is a platform where leaders are created, a safe space where young women will learn to be independent and be self-driven by their ambitions. This platform empowers women to sharpen their skills and character. It aims to help them to rebuild self-confidence and be the greatest version of themselves,” explains Mmushi-Matsafu.

She explains that the pageant was conceived and trademarked in 2017. She used the past five years to do the work of creating proper structure before launching the pageant.

“The pageant was inspired by the capital city that I am currently residing in, the City of Tshwane  We started the pageant because we want to bring change we want to create a safe space, which will be a platform to transform the lives of young woman and mentor them”.

For the first edition this year, the focus is on entrants from nine provinces and choosing only one winner.

Mmush-Matsafu says the pageant is not just another event, but an institute for developing personalities in all aspects. It is geared at teaching and focusing on developing personalities from the inside out. The aim is to promote peace, cultural exchange, and social responsibility. A platform for young women to showcase their talents, skills, and beauty while promoting unity, diversity and cultural exchange.

It is believed that confidence from the inside will affect the behaviour, character and personality of each person. For example, gait (manner of walking), standing, sitting, communication, social and eating etiquette. She believes those who are confident and self-esteemed, have the advantage of having the courage to make a decision, having a clear goal in life, and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of their own – hence a person with a good personality builds credibility and tended to have a good chance at landing a job.

Geniver started her modelling career at the Soweto Fashion Week, RVK Fashion Week and Pretoria Fashion Week. She was also a television presenter of Bona Retsang on SABC 1 show. She is also a former ambassador of Miss Africa Continent 2016, participated in Miss Dobsonville, model for Darling Hairpiece.  She came up with her own modelling shows, namely, Miss Winter, Miss Christmas and the Bannister Hotel Fashion Show.

METRO AWARDS MESMERISED LIKE RUNWAY MBOMBELA TRAIN

OFFERINGS: The gig celebrates AKA’s musical genius, leaving tantalised fans with huge hangover…

The highly anticipated Metro FM Music Awards 2023, hosted at Mpumalanga’s Mbombela Stadium last week, lived up to their unassailable reputation of being an ornately grand affair.

METRO CELEBRATES AKA’S MUSICAL GENIUS!
METRO CELEBRATES AKA’S MUSICAL GENIUS!

Signaling the end to a five-year hiatus on account of the Covid pandemic, the mother-of-all-parties turned out to be the late AKA’s posthumous party. Looming large over the proceedings was the memory of the superstar rapper’s peculiar ability to navigate the hip-hop space, collaborating with leaders in the genre globally, his intuitive touch and genius in dropping tightly crafted offerings that never failed to strike the right chord among fans and admirers. This was the persona which was celebrated extensively on Saturday.

Pitted against some of his finest artistic peers who are charts dominators in the fiercely contested categories, AKA still scooped Artist of the Year, Best Male Artist, Best Collaboration Song featuring Nasty C and Best Hip Hop Artist.

DJ Tira proved why he’s the king of gqom when he walked away with Best Kwaito/Gqom Song and Best Video awards for Sikilidi. He did it for Durban’s finest. Not forgetting his thrilling performance with gqom queen Babes Wodumo at the start of the evening.

Other KZNers who creamed it off, were recent PhD graduate Nduduzo Makhathini, who took Best Jazz Album for his In the Spirit of Ntu offering. Best Duo/Group award went to Inkabi Nation.

Internationally renowned Ndebele artist Esther Mahlangu and Mafikizolo duo Nhlanhla Mafu and Theo Kgosinkwe received Lifetime Achievement Awards for vibrant works of art and the duo’s illustrious career that is peppered with hits and stints representing SA internationally with such aplomb and dignity. They capped it off with a stunning medley of their infectious repertoire. As usual, they sported their signature black-and-yellow hues that complimented each other.

Makhadzi receive her well-deserved award for Best Female Artist. Dare I speculate about her whereabouts when she was hailed for her big moment but she’d disappeared.

Another biggie, Betusile Mcinga, snatched Song of the Year for his massive sing-along, Ngenaa Noah gospel hit. He’s gospel star Lusanda’s son, testament that apple didn’t fall far from the tree. Deep London bagged Best Amapiano Song for Hamba Wena and Best Viral Challenge featuring Boohle, Hamba Wena. Skye Wnda accepted Best Deep House Song for Amazwi.

Competition was stiff. For example, take Grammy-award winner Zakes Bantwini, who was really in the thick of the running, but went home empty-handed.

So was KO with Sete, which saw him bag Song of the Year at the end of 2022. A song that’s still on high rotation. It’s even gained traction internationally so much he’s released a version for that same market.

He didn’t make the grade in spite of dominating their Top 30. The popular Sjava was also in the running with Isoka, but went home with nothing to thank his fans for.

AKA swept the boards, making his dad so happy that he even fell. Mom dedicated another award to Forbes senior while the audience insisted that it should rather be to AKA’s daughter, Cairi. Black is definitely back with a bang.
