UNPRECENDENTED: Fifth time in six years that the boys from Kansas City have reached NFL’s championship game
By Sports Reporter
The Kansas City Chiefs are one win from an unprecedented NFL ‘three-peat’ after beating the Buffalo Bills to reach Super Bowl 59.
The Chiefs held on for a thrilling 32-29 win over the Bills to become the first back-to-back champions to return to the Super Bowl. It is the fifth time in six years that Kansas City have reached the NFL’s championship game, winning three of the past five.
They will face the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans on 9 February, in a repeat of Super Bowl 57. The Eagles came into the Conference Championship games as slight favourites to win this year’s Super Bowl and romped to a 55-23 win over the Washington Commanders earlier on Sunday.
Buffalo quarterback Josh Allen is the slight favourite to be named this season’s Most Valuable Player but the Bills came up against the Chiefs in the post-season for the fourth time in five years.
And again Kansas City counterpart Patrick Mahomes, a two-time season MVP, came out on top in a nail-biting finish to the AFC Championship game.
Visitors Buffalo led 22-21 coming into the fourth quarter, in which the game hinged on two short-yardage plays by the Bills.
They came either side of two fine touchdown drives and a Chiefs field goal which ultimately proved decisive. Each time Buffalo turned the ball over on downs, leaving the hosts’ offence with less than two minutes to see out the game and close in on NFL immortality.
ESPN Analytics has revealed its Matchup Predictor numbers for the Sunday, Feb. 9, NFL championship game at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans and it offers interesting win probabilities for the game between the AFC champion Chiefs and NFC champion Eagles. The Eagles have a 56.2% chance to beat Chiefs in Super Bowl, according to ESPN. The site gives the Chiefs a 43.8% shot at winning the NFL playoff game. The Arizona Republic is predicting a 30-27 win for the Chiefs over the Eagles in the Super Bowl.
Jeremy Cluff wrote: “This is a rematch of the Super Bowl in 2023 and we like the Chiefs to get the better of the Eagles this season like they did that season when they earned a 38-35 win. Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Andy Reid just know how to win in the postseason and their legends will only grow with a third straight Super Bowl title in a narrow win over Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley and the Eagles.”
Kansas City is a favorite in other sites’ picks for the outcome of the NFL championship game between the Chiefs and Eagles, but not everyone is picking the Eagles to beat the Chiefs. Bookies.com is picking the Chiefs to cover against the Eagles, writing that “in the end, here, the NFL gets what the NFL wants. So look for the close calls to continue to fall Kansas City’s way. The Shield wants Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs to have their 3-peat.”
Dimers forecasts a 25-23 game score, with Kansas City defeating Philadelphia in the Super Bowl. Bleacher Report picks a 28-24 win for the Eagles, writing that “the Eagles are also perfectly suited to pick up the short-yardage plays that proved to be Buffalo’s undoing in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game.”
The Chiefs are a 1.5-point favorite over the Eagles in Super Bowl odds for the game, courtesy of BetMGM Sportsbook.
Kansas City is -130 on the moneyline, while Philadelphia is +110.
