Urban Edge Radio, a fast-growing urban online radio station, is celebrating its first anniversary, marking a year of broadcasting dedicated to transformation, community upliftment and delivering practical solutions for everyday urban life.

Since its launch, the station has positioned itself as more than an entertainment platform, focusing instead on content that empowers listeners through access to knowledge, real-world insights and immediate action.

Speaking on behalf of the station, former Department of Water and Sanitation spokesperson Mr Sputnik Ratau said Urban Edge Radio was rooted in meaningful transformation.

“Urban Edge Radio is anchored on transformation. Its core mission is to provide tangible, life-changing solutions that empower listeners and the broader community through knowledge, access and instant action,” said Ratau.

The station’s on-air offering includes a diverse and influential line-up of presenters. Among them is celebrated musician and cultural icon Brian Temba, who hosts a popular Sunday show from 3pm to 6pm.

The programme blends music with insight-driven conversation and regularly attracts more than 300 000 live interactions on TikTok.

Market intelligence

Adding a strong business dimension to the station is veteran broadcaster Stevie B, host of The Business Boost, a programme focused on market intelligence and the growth of local and emerging enterprises. The show features commentary and analysis from respected industry figures, including David Crook.

According to programmes manager Thokozane Maloka, Urban Edge Radio’s content strategy is built around five key pillars aimed at delivering transformative solutions: health, wellness, wealth, financial literacy and education.

Through expert-led discussions and awareness campaigns, the station provides accessible health information to help listeners make informed decisions. It also actively promotes physical and mental wellness by supporting community sporting initiatives, including the upcoming West Rand Marathon.

In the area of wealth creation and financial literacy, Urban Edge Radio simplifies complex financial concepts, encouraging responsible money management, long-term planning and generational wealth building. Educational programming further includes shows hosted by Thabisile Sethaba, a law student who educates listeners on wills and the administration of deceased estates — a critical yet often neglected aspect of personal planning.

Beyond talk and information, the station delivers high-energy weekend music programming, offering a platform for raw talent and showcasing a vibrant, authentic urban sound through its DJ-led shows.

Not just a radio

Founder and executive chairman Siphiwe Motha said the station’s purpose was clear from the outset.

“The vision of Urban Edge Radio is not to be escape radio, but to be a station that goes beyond entertainment. That is why our payoff line is Not Just Radio.

We aim to offer our listeners real opportunities to transform their lives through knowledge and tangible, life-changing initiatives,” Motha said.

As Urban Edge Radio celebrates its first year on air, the station says it is committed to expanding its impact and continuing to deliver functional urban radio that informs, inspires, entertains and transforms communities.
