Led by talisman Sadio Mane and boasting a talented crop of players who have already made their mark on the African stage, Senegal will approach Group I full of confidence as they prepare to face France, Iraq and Norway.

Quietly determined and blessed with pace, directness and a clinical eye for goal, Mane has carved out a remarkable career over the years, achieving success in several different leagues. After coming through the ranks at Generation Foot and Metz, the Senegalese forward continued his rise at Salzburg, honing his game before making his name in the Premier League with Southampton. It was at Liverpool, however, that he reached another level, becoming one of the leading faces of the Jurgen Klopp era and firmly establishing himself as one of the world’s greatest attackers.

In a front three alongside Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, Mane played a key role in propelling Liverpool back to the top of world club football, helping the Reds win the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the Premier League, both domestic cups in 2022 and the 2019 edition of what is now the FIFA Intercontinental Cup™.

While plying his trade at the Merseyside giants, he racked up a total of 120 goals and 46 assists in 269 appearances.

A brief spell at Bayern Munich in 2022/23 saw Mane add a Bundesliga title and a DFL-Supercup to his long list of honours, having already scooped back-to-back domestic doubles at Salzburg before his move to English football.

With Mane on the pitch, our chances rise—he doesn’t
just play, he shifts the fear factor…

In August 2023, he chose to embrace a new challenge by joining Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr, where he plays alongside a host of other illustrious figures, headed by Cristiano Ronaldo. He continues to offer experience and proven quality at the highest level in a league that is going from strength to strength.

For Senegal, his influence has been every bit as significant. Mane’s inspirational leadership was instrumental in the country’s historic triumph at the 2021 CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) – their first continental crown – and he remains the player around whom their hopes so often revolve on the biggest stages. With the FIFA World Cup 2026™ on the horizon, he is set to be the pride of the Lions of Teranga once again.

Mane tributes

Former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp: “He is an outstanding player. If you ask me whether he is a striker, yes, from time to time. Is he a midfielder? Yes, from time to time. He can probably play in a slightly deeper position as well. He is physically strong, technically strong, he is unbelievably quick, he is quick in mind as well, and he is a good shooter with both feet. He is a fantastic person.”

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard: “He’s awesome; he’s great to watch. He’s the type of player you’d go and pay big money to go and watch every single week because he’s great on the eye. He’s so quick – he makes things happen. For someone so quick and the speed that he does it at, to have the touch and the finesse that he shows… is world-class.”

Pundit and Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher: “My favourite Liverpool player of this [Klopp] era, Sadio Mane, finally departs. Low maintenance, high performance and never injured! Trophies and goals galore, a true Liverpool Legend. Thank you Sadio.”

Former Senegal international El Hadji Diouf:  “Although Sadio is no longer as nimble as he was at 25, he still helps us a lot. With him on the pitch, our chances of winning a match rise to 60 per cent, because the opponents are worried when he’s there. We’re yet to see the last of Sadio.”

Mane trivia

Mane entered the Premier League record books on 16 May, 2015, when he scored a quick-fire hat-trick for Southampton against Aston Villa in just 2 minutes 56 seconds. Eclipsing Robbie Fowler’s mark, the treble remains the fastest hat-trick in Premier League history.

His boyhood idols were Ronaldinho and El Hadji Diouf. Mane even told his childhood best friend, Luc, he would “reach their level one day”.

The Senegalese star has never forgotten Bambali, the village where he grew up, and remains deeply connected to his roots. Over the years, he has given back by funding a range of facilities, including a health centre, a secondary school and a football pitch. Those efforts underline his commitment to supporting his community and improving everyday life for its residents.

Mane statistics

With 124 caps to his name, Mane sits second on Senegal’s all-time appearances list, behind only Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye, who has 129.

Having notched 52 strikes for the Lions of Teranga, the 34-year-old is way out ahead atop Senegal’s all-time goalscoring leader board. He surpassed Henri Camara’s previous record of 29 goals on 4 June 2022 by scoring a hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Benin at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio.

During his eight seasons in England, with Southampton and Liverpool, the Senegalese marksman always hit double digits. In 2018/19, he even shared the Premier League Golden Boot with Liverpool team-mate Salah and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after the African trio finished on 22 goals apiece.

Mane’s World Cup history

Mane has featured at just one World Cup so far, Russia 2018, where he played every minute for his side, who beat Poland 2-1 before registering a 2-2 draw with Japan and suffering a 1-0 defeat to Colombia.

The jet-heeled hotshot opened the scoring against the Asian team and remained a constant threat in all three matches but, despite his performances, the Lions of Teranga failed to progress beyond the group stage. In 2022, injury struck at the worst possible time, sadly forcing the then Bayern Munich man to withdraw from Senegal’s World Cup squad.

Senegal will head into the FIFA World Cup 2026 with lofty ambitions, powered by a golden generation now well versed in the demands of a major tournament. Lifted by their triumph at the 2021 AFCON (held in 2022) and eager to build on the momentum generated by their exploits at the most recent instalment of the continental competition, the Lions of Teranga will set their sights on reaching the knockout rounds at the global showpiece this time around.

Beyond that, the ambition is clear: to emulate their best World Cup performance to date – an unforgettable journey to the quarter-finals at the 2002 edition.

As Senegal brace themselves to get their campaign under way against France, seeking to bring back the magic of 2002, Mane will naturally be central to their plans. His experience, leadership and match-winning ability make him the figurehead of a team raring to embark on another trailblazing run on the world stage. – Fifaonline
