The RMB Ultra-trail Drakensberg (RMB UTD) has evolved into one of the leading trail-running events in South Africa and is steadily gaining international recognition, thanks largely to the breathtaking and demanding terrain of the Drakensberg mountains.

Speaking during a one-on-one interview, RMB Sponsorship Marketing Lead Michael Edwards said the event’s growth mirrors the global rise in trail running participation and commercial interest.

“We’re seeing triple-digit growth in participation across trail running events, as well as strong commercial growth in the sport,” said Edwards.

This year, organisers introduced a new 14km race category to broaden participation and attract runners of varying abilities, from elite international competitors tackling the gruelling 100-miler and 100km races to newcomers entering the sport.

Edwards said the appeal of RMB UTD lies not only in its world-class racing conditions but also in the unique atmosphere created by the mountains and surrounding communities.

“The scale and beauty of the mountains create an experience that puts both life and personal challenges into perspective,” he said.

He added that the event has become a platform for celebrating human potential while creating opportunities that extend beyond sport.

“At its core, the message from RMB is about celebrating the human spirit and the depth of talent we have in this country,” Edwards said. “When people are given the right platform and opportunity, they consistently rise to the occasion.”

Beyond competition, RMB UTD also incorporates social upliftment and conservation initiatives. One of the key partnerships is with LIV2Run, an organisation dedicated to mentoring and developing young South African trail runners.

LIV2Run founder Lindi Meyer said the initiative was built on the belief that running can transform lives and open doors for young people. “It’s about so much more than sport; it’s about creating opportunity and changing life trajectories,”

Meyer said. She said many senior athletes who have benefited from the programme are now mentoring junior runners, creating a sustainable cycle of development and leadership within communities. The event also supports environmental preservation through partnerships with WILDLIFE ACT and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, particularly in protecting the critically endangered Bearded Vulture found in the region.
