JUNE 16: ENDURING MEMORY OF SOWETO UPRISING

She was only 17 on June 16 1976 when her 12-year-old younger brother, Hector Pieterson, was shot dead by a policeman during an anti-Afrikaans march by thousands of Soweto students.  Now 57, Antoinette Sithole (left) has continued to be the custodian of the memory of the tragic shooting during the Soweto Student Uprising. The image of her walking beside Mbuyisa Makhubo holding her injured brother has since become an iconic global symbol of resistance against apartheid. On Tuesday (June 16), Sithole joined scores, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, at a commemoration of 50TH anniversary of the event at Hector Pieterson in Soweto. Photo: Jacob Mawela
