RARING:Boipelo set to skate on solid ice
The introduction of a further four sporting codes into the Olympics fold couldn’t have come at the right time for Kimberley’s little known skateboarder, Boipelo Awuah, who will represent South Africa in Tokyo next month.
Skateboarding goes to the Tokyo Olympics 2020 after a long battle to convince the world that it’s not just a time whiling game for youths but is a sport that also deserves recognition. Other three codes that will be part of the activities in Japan starting on July 11 to August 8 include karate, surfing and sport climbing.
Fifteen-year-old Awuah, a Northern Cape High School grade-10 student in order for her to join the South African Olympics team she flew all the way to Rome where she competed with some of the skateboarders you can find during a pre-qualifier for Tokyo. The impressive and bubbly skateboarder is likely to be the youngest member of the team which is still to be officially announced by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympics Committee (SASCOC).
Currently this team already has teenagers such as the swimming serial medal winner Pieter “Oom” Coetzee (16) a student at TUKS and also Naveen Daries (19) a resilient artistic gymnast. Daries who has won a number of national championships and also brought home medals from international competitions, like Coetzee she is also from Tshwane. – wsam
