FIVE TIMES: A SUNDOWNS WIN AGAINST THE CITIZENS TUESDAY IS GAME AND SET FOR THE 2022/23 DStv PREMIERSHIP LOG WITH SEVEN MATCHES TO GO

By Ali Mphaki

Sorry SuperSport United, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs. Mathematics has never been made simple thanks to Mamelodi Sundowns

Win or draw for Masandawana come Tuesday it will be all over for the 2022/DStv Premiership Log – even with seven games remaining.

No need to begrudge Downs fans when they invade the Loftus Versfeld stadiums in Pretoria with champagne bottles in their luggage. Victory, as in clinching the DStv Premeirship for the FIFTH time in a row – is nigh.  A win for Masandawana will see them extend their lead to an unassailable 62 points, and deserveldy so be declared the winners of the 2023/23 DStv Premiership log.

Both teams have met each other 28 times, with Downs winning 14 of the matches and scoring 53 goals, as opposed to the Citizens winning only 8 of the encounters.

It may not matter, but Sundowns had eight (8) of its players called up for the 23-man Bafana Bafana Squad to compete in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Even their top striker Peter Shalulile, was on duty for his country Namibia where he scored when they held Cameroon to a 1-all draw and when they beat Ghana 2-1 at the Dobsonville stadium on Tuesday.

The same cannot be said of the Citizens, with hardly one of their players making it to the SA national squad – left twiddling their thumbs at home. It is hard to think of the outcome of this encounter not going Sundows way.

Only a miracle – of biblical proportions – from The Citizens will prevent that from happening.
