When your favourite model graduates to include a special edition in its line-up – it can only mean two things.
Its either the manufacturer is merely flaunting its stuff around or responding to a cry from its customers wanting the model to be immortalized.
To this end VWSA seem to have heeded calls from the millions of Polo enthusiasts who now have a chance to boast that their favourite model has assumed legendary status with the introduction of the special edition Polo GTI Edition 20.
In case you still thinking about it, stop blinking and better hurry up because only 400 units of the special edition will be available for sale in Mzansi.
A look at the rearview mirror will show its two decades since the first Polo GTI was introduced in South Africa in 2006.
In its original form the 2006 model (the second iteration internationally) featured a 1.8-litre turbo petrol engine delivering 110kW.
In 2011, VW introduced the all-new Polo GTI powered by a twin-charged 1.4-litre engine followed by the third-generation model offered with a 1.8-litre turbocharged TSI engine in 2015.
What sets the special edition aside from its siblings is its distinctive features which features a black roof, 18-inch Faro alloy wheels (smoked clear on bright machined wheels), exterior mirrors housing painted in black and includes front and rear door-decals with “20”.
The interior is just as characteristic and unmistakable as its exterior.
Stylishly confident and expressive, but never obtrusive – the new Polo GTI Edition 20 features a leather-wrapped multifunction sports steering wheel, DIGITAL Cockpit Pro, privacy glass from B=Pillar backwards including rear glass, Piano black dashboard, door panel inserts.
To further accentuate its special characteristics, the dashboard decals with “20 GTI”, front mats with “20” GTI” embroidery and red stitching rear floor mats, red binding stitch colour only (no embroidery) including sports leather seats with red vinyl.
Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre TSI engine with 147kW power output. The engine has a maximum torque of 320 Nm available from 1 500 – 4 350rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed DSG gearbox.
VW claims it accelerated to 100km/h in 6.7 seconds and reaches a top speed of 237km/h.
The introduction of the special edition Polo GTI Edition 20 also coincides with the significant milestone for the brand, as the VW Polo celebrated its 50th anniversary globally in 2025.
In addition, Plant Kariega celebrated 30 years of Polo manufacturing in South Africa in 2026. Plant Kariega is the sole manufacturer of Polo GTI in the VW production network.
The continued popularity of the Polo GTI highlights a strong market demand for a compact performance focused hatch, making a commemorative edition both timely and relevant.
The VW Polo GTI Edition 20 comes standard with a 3-year/120 000 km warranty.
The service interval is 15 000km. As further confirmation of the VW Polo popularity, the latest SA vehicle sales figures show a massive month to the VW Polo Vivo surging to the top of the passenger car charts. The local favouurite moved an impressive 2 229 units in the month of March.
