ORLANDO PIRATES have returned to Stellenbosch FC’s increasingly productive talent factory, signing New Zealand goalkeeper Dublin Boon as the latest recruit in a sustained raid on the Cape Winelands club.
The 21-year-old has reportedly signed a three-year contract with the reigning Betway Premiership champions after spending less than a year at Stellenbosch.
Boon’s transfer means Pirates have recruited six Stellenbosch players since August 2024 — Deano van Rooyen, Sihle Nduli, André de Jong, Mthetheleli Mthiyane, Thapelo Mokobodi and now the young goalkeeper.
The move further illustrates Stellenbosch’s emergence as one of South African football’s most productive development and trading clubs. Since the beginning of 2024, the Winelands side have generated an estimated R68 million or more from player transfers to Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and overseas clubs. The true figure is likely to be substantially higher because most of the transfer fees were officially described as undisclosed.
Boon joined Stellenbosch from Wellington Phoenix in August 2025 and was largely used as a reserve goalkeeper in the club’s DStv Diski Challenge structures. He did not make a senior professional appearance for the Maroons.
His representatives confirmed the Pirates move on social media. “New chapter for our client @dub_bn19, joining the @officialpsl_za champions @orlandopirates,” the agency said. “Thank you to @stellenbosch_fc for the professionalism and role in Dublin’s development thus far. The best is yet to come.”
Born in Christchurch, Boon began his career with Nomads United and Christchurch United before moving to the Netherlands, where he spent time with Roda JC.
He later returned to New Zealand and joined Wellington Phoenix on a one-year scholarship agreement before Stellenbosch brought him to South Africa.
His arrival adds youth and international development experience to Pirates’ goalkeeping department following the departure of former Jomo Cosmos and TS Galaxy shot-stopper Melusi Buthelezi.
Boon is expected to compete for a place in a Pirates squad being strengthened to defend the league championship and challenge in continental competition.
SIX FROM STELLENBOSCH
Pirates’ interest in Stellenbosch players began in earnest when the Buccaneers bought club captain Van Rooyen in August 2024. The right-back departed the Cape after eight years and a club-record 161 appearances across all competitions. He had helped Stellenbosch win promotion to the Premiership in 2019 and lifted the 2023 Carling Knockout as co-captain.
Although neither club disclosed the price, contemporary reports placed Stellenbosch’s valuation at approximately R5 million. Defensive midfielder Nduli followed Van Rooyen to Orlando in 2025 after making more than 100 appearances across all competitions for Stellenbosch.
Nduli, however, moved at the end of his contract, meaning Stellenbosch did not receive a conventional transfer fee. Pirates returned for New Zealand international De Jong in January this year.
The forward had made 114 appearances for Stellenbosch, scoring 19 goals and supplying 11 assists. He was part of the squad that won the 2023 Carling Knockout, reached successive MTN8 finals and advanced to the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals. He also scored Stellenbosch’s first goal in continental competition. The permanent-transfer fee paid by Pirates was not disclosed.
Mthiyane became the fourth player to move from Stellenbosch to Pirates in June. He made 38 appearances during his only season in the Winelands before joining the Soweto club in a deal reportedly linked to Thabiso Lebitso moving in the opposite direction. Pirates then signed midfielder Mokobodi in July.
The 23-year-old completed 28 appearances in his solitary Stellenbosch season and signed a three-year contract with the champions. Boon now becomes the sixth player to make the same journey — and the second New Zealander after De Jong.
SUNDOWNS’ BIG-MONEY MACHINE
While Pirates have recruited the greatest number of Stellenbosch players, Mamelodi Sundowns appear to have spent the most money at the club.
Sundowns triggered Iqraam Rayners’ contractual buyout clause in August 2024. Stellenbosch confirmed that the clause had been activated, while reports valued the transaction at between R10 million and R15 million. Rayners left as the club’s all-time leading scorer, with 68 goals in 135 appearances across two spells. Sundowns returned in January 2025 to sign academy-produced midfielder Jayden Adams.
The fee was not published, although reports suggested the transfer could have been worth up to R20 million. Adams had made 139 appearances for Stellenbosch after becoming the first graduate from its academy to sign a professional contract. His death last month, shortly after representing South Africa at the World Cup, brought an untimely end to one of the club’s greatest development stories.
The Brazilians completed a third major deal in July 2025 when they acquired Bafana Bafana left-back Fawaaz Basadien. Reports placed his fee just below R25 million, although the clubs never confirmed the amount. Basadien departed after 111 appearances across three seasons. Those three transactions alone may have delivered between R55 million and R60 million to Stellenbosch.
INTERNATIONAL PIPELINE
Stellenbosch’s influence has also extended beyond South Africa.
Academy graduate Antonio van Wyk moved to Austrian club SV Ried in September 2024 for a recorded €100,000 — approximately R2 million.
Young defender Tylon Smith joined English Championship side Queens Park Rangers in July 2025. Although the clubs announced an undisclosed transfer, QPR’s season transfer records listed the price at £300,000, equivalent to about R6.1 million. Smith’s move was particularly significant because he progressed through Stellenbosch’s under-14, under-16, under-18 and reserve teams before securing his first overseas contract.
Ivorian defender Ismaël Touré was sold to Baniyas in the United Arab Emirates, while Anicet Oura joined Finland’s IF Gnistan permanently following an earlier loan spell with Muaither in Qatar.
Croatian defender Henri Stanic has since joined Tanzanian club Azam FC. None of those transfer fees was disclosed.
PHILI DEAL ADDS VALUE
Kaizer Chiefs entered the Stellenbosch market this month by signing highly rated winger Langelihle Phili. Stellenbosch had reportedly valued the 21-year-old at R16 million, but the completed agreement involved Ashley du Preez and Given Msimango moving to the Winelands.
The arrangement, therefore, cannot be recorded as a R16 million cash sale. However, the acquisition of two experienced Premiership players represents considerable value for Stellenbosch.
Phili departed after 72 senior appearances. He scored nine goals and registered one assist in 39 matches during the 2025/26 campaign.
R68 MILLION — AND COUNTING
Using only the most widely reported values attached to Rayners, Van Rooyen, Van Wyk, Adams, Smith and Basadien, Stellenbosch have generated an estimated R68 million to R73 million since 2024.
That calculation excludes the undisclosed fees for Touré, Oura, De Jong, Mthiyane, Mokobodi, Stanic and Boon. It also excludes possible loan payments, performance bonuses, sell-on clauses and the player value gained through the Phili and Mthiyane transactions.
Boon’s transfer cannot yet be added to the cash estimate because neither Pirates nor Stellenbosch have published the financial terms. Nevertheless, his departure strengthens the broader conclusion: Stellenbosch have established a football production line capable of supplying champions, Soweto giants and international clubs while repeatedly replenishing their own squad.
Pirates may be the most frequent customer, but the Cape Winelands club continues to be the biggest winner from a model that combines recruitment, development and commercial return.
