Cape winery launches artist’s retreat to promote ‘sense of place’

CRAFT: Graham Beck’s new Artist’s Retreat pairs terroir with art through a painted wine egg…

By WSAM Reporter

Graham Beck has introduced a new cultural initiative, The Artist’s Retreat, positioning the Cap Classique house at the intersection of luxury winemaking, fine art and innovation.

Described as an immersive residency, the Artist’s Retreat invites acclaimed creatives to engage with the Robertson estate’s landscape and reinterpret its “sense of place” through original works. The first edition of the retreat welcomed celebrated multidisciplinary artist Michael Chandler, who returned to the estate following a previous collaboration with Graham Beck.

During a three-day stay in the vineyards, Chandler produced a singular artwork: a hand-painted ceramic wine egg, crafted using pigments made from the estate’s own soil.

Set across 3 000 hectares of limestone-rich terrain and protected nature reserve, the retreat is designed to deepen the understanding of terroir beyond wine — presenting it as a cultural force shaping taste, aesthetics and creative expression.

For Chandler, that meant sourcing his own materials directly from the land. Using chalky limestone and decomposed granite from Graham Beck’s vineyards, he refined the earth into pigments — translating Robertson’s geology into a palette of delicate natural colour.

His canvas, the ceramic wine egg, is a signature innovation within the Graham Beck cellar. The eggs are used as fermentation vessels valued for their purity of form, with their curved shape encouraging natural circulation while the porous ceramic supports gentle oxygen exchange — methods associated with refined texture and restrained elegance.

Chandler’s creative process unfolded across three days: gathering and preparing pigments on the first day, painting outdoors beneath the Robertson sky on the second, and completing layered imagery by the third.

The finished piece combines botanical references, geological textures and subtle echoes of the Graham Beck Nature Reserve, creating what the estate describes as a “dialogue between terroir, time and creative mastery.” The completed ceramic wine egg now resides in the estate’s “Innovation Cellar”, a space dedicated to experimentation and the future of Cap Classique.

Graham Beck said the work stands as both artefact and emblem — reflecting a belief that mastery, whether in art or winemaking, is continuously evolving.

The Artist’s Retreat will return in 2026, with new artists expected to reinterpret the landscape and expand the creative conversation between craft, culture and place.
