Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Siphesihle Ndlovu says Sunday’s meeting with Lamontville Golden Arrows is a chance to keep pace near the top of the Betway Premiership — and settle a score from earlier in the season.
Amakhosi are unbeaten after six league matches, with three wins and three draws, but Arrows eliminated them from the MTN8 in August. A 1-1 draw against Polokwane City last weekend has added urgency to Chiefs’ trip to Mbombela Stadium.
“We were disappointed not to get the win against Polokwane,” Ndlovu said. “We have had a week to prepare for this one. We have played them already and we know it won’t be an easy ride.”
Arrows have reason to fancy their chances beyond that cup victory. They beat Mamelodi Sundowns in both legs of their MTN8 semi-final before drawing 1-1 away to Siwelele FC in their latest league outing. Chiefs, meanwhile, will be without injured captain and goalkeeper Brandon Petersen and striker Wandile Duba. Ndlovu said their replacements must be ready to step up.
“They are two important players, but we are a squad,” he said. “We trust the players who will come in to fulfil the roles they are given.”
Chiefs sit fourth with 12 points from six matches. Ndlovu expects a difficult contest against an Arrows side he describes as comfortable in possession and dangerous on the break, but says Amakhosi have a plan to counter those strengths.
“If we want to stay in the title race, this game is vital,” he said. “Whether we win in style or by grinding it out, we want those three points.”
Arrows are the designated home side, although the fixture will be played in Mpumalanga rather than KwaZulu-Natal. Kick-off is at 15:00 on Sunday, 20 September. Tickets cost R100.
