The depth, resilience and global competitiveness of South Africa’s wine industry were on full display yesterday, when leading role players were honoured at the annual Wine Harvest Commemorative Event, hosted once again at Groot Constantia in Cape Town last night.

The prestigious ceremony celebrated five outstanding contributors to the industry, blessed the new grape harvest, and commemorated the birth of South African wine 367 years ago — a milestone uniquely anchored to a diary entry dated February 2 1659 recording the first wine made from Cape grapes.“This year’s event was a wonderful celebration of the vibrant community that defines our wine heritage,” said Clifford van der Venter, chairperson of the Groot Constantia Trust. “It was a privilege to honour individuals and organisations who continue to set standards of excellence and ensure that South Africa holds its own in a highly competitive global market.”

Honouring torchbearers

The 2026 recipients were recognised for their lasting impact across leadership, transformation, technical excellence and labour development:

The Retief family of Van Loveren Wine Estate received the 1659 Award for Visionary Leadership for their industry-leading contributions spanning wine tourism, transformation, innovation, sustainability and agricultural diversification. Their long-term investments in renewable energy, employee shareholding schemes and biodiversity protection were cited as benchmarks for inclusive growth.

Denzel Swarts, Sales and Brand Executive at Zoetendal Vineyards, was honoured in the Growing Inclusivity category for breaking barriers, mentoring future leaders and advancing transformation through industry bodies and youth development initiatives. Pieter Ferreira received the Wine Advancement award for his pivotal role in elevating Cap Classique to world-class status, notably through his leadership at Graham Beck and his tireless promotion of South African sparkling wine internationally.

Charl Theron was recognised in the Viti- and Viniculture category for more than five decades of academic, technical and consultative excellence that has shaped both local and international wine practice.

Wilfred Fortuin was named Wine Agri-Worker of the Year, selected by the Western Cape Department of Agriculture. At just 31, Fortuin was praised as a role model for youth after completing advanced cellar training at Elsenburg and representing South Africa on a cellar worker exchange programme in Burgundy, France.

Partnership and economic significance

The event was made possible through the support of Groot Constantia and premium financial partner Standard Bank, alongside partners including Air France-KLM, the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, South Africa Wine, Vinpro and several media and logistics partners.

Highlighting the sector’s economic importance, Standard Bank’s head of agribusiness Brendan Jacobs said South African wine had both the quality and story to compete globally, with finance and market access playing a key role in unlocking further growth.

Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism Ivan Meyer said the event underscored the strength, innovation and inclusivity that continue to drive job creation and rural development in the province, paying special tribute to agri-workers who sustain the industry.

As South Africa celebrates another harvest season, the Wine Harvest Commemorative Event once again affirmed that the legacy of South African wine is not only rooted in history, but actively shaped by excellence, transformation and shared purpose.
