SCRAMBLE: Categories up for grabs

The long awaited SAMA 27 is finally happening, albeit virtually. This is largely due to the pandemic’s vicious grip on the world. As a result our country is on Alert Level 4.

Known for their glamour and razzmatazz, the Samas will be aired on SABC 1 on July 31st, at 8pm. Between 7.30pm and 8pm, nominees who will be pre-recorded on the red carpet, will be shown on Real Goboza.

Artists across the genre spectrum may not be strutting their stuff live on the red carpet as usual. However, the excitement and tension will be just as electric. All eyes will be firmly fixated on the presenters who are the bearers of good or bad news, depending on what’s in the envelope.

Whatever happens, music lovers and fans will have a final say on who takes which major award home between the highly contested Record of the Year and Music Video of the Year SAMA.

Neck and neck for the most coverted award at the SAMA 27, are Blaq Diamond for their monster hit Love Letter and Summer Yomuthi, against MFR Souls with maverck rapper  Nasty C’s Amanikiniki featuring Major League DJz, Kamo Mphela and Bontle Smith.

Staking a claim at the most sought after affirmation in the land with their dance till the break of dawn song Love You Tonight, are Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa and Sha Sha. Sexy and contreversial Kelly Khumalo with Empini, books her space within the top 20. Meanwhile Sha Sha’s Tender Love featuring DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small has captured fans who hoping for a SAMA.

Simmy who features Sino Msolo, has been nominated for Ngihamba Nawe. A consterlation of stars nominated for You’re The One for Music Video of the Year and Miss Pru on Price To Pay that features Blaq Diamond and Malome Vector.The silky smooth Shekhinah rises to the ocassion on Fixate featuring Bey T.

Azana’s Your Love with its happy, sing along melody joins the ranks of the chosen stars. Innovative ideas paid off for Master KG on the global anthem Jerusalema which features the talented Nomcebo.

Once again Kabza De Small with eMcimbini featuring DJ Maphorisa, make a showing on the Record of the Year, determined to take it home. Prince Kaybee invited his partners on the beat: Black Motion, Shimza and Amy Faku on uWrongo for Record of the Year.

Sun-El  Abumanga alongside Msaki joins the league of Record of the Year nominees. Nasty C on There They Go and Easy for the Video of the Year category. Once again DJ Maphorisa invited Kabza De Small on Lorch, featuring Semi Tee, Miano and Kammu Dee get a shot at Music Video of the Year.

Most fortunate Orlando Pirates player Thembinkosi Lorch, is lucky not only to have a song dedicated to him likr in the case of Doc Shebeleza. His song will go head to head with Master  KG’s international anthem Jerusalem, boasting Nomcebo’s vocal prowess and skill  penning the unforgettable lyrics.

As if the possibility of walking away with Record of the Year is not fantastic enough, Amanikiniki by MFR Souls featuring Kamo Mphela Nasty C and Bontle, is also gunning for Music Video of the Year.

Also in the running for Music Video of the Year is uWrongo, by Prince Kaybee featuring Black Motion, Shimza and Ami Faku.Also in the queue for the big one is Molo by Aubrey Qwana, Your Love by Azana and You’re The One by Elaine.

Joining the ranks of those vying for the honor of taking Music Video of the Year is Okokoko by  Sphectacula and DJ Naves featuring Thebe and Unathi.

Not to be left out is Kwesta’s Njandini. Also jumping into the mix is Focalistic’s Ke Star, featuring Vigro.

Raising their hand to be counted for the Video of the Year is,Malome Vector’s Dumelang  featuring Blaq Diamond.  Angling for the most wanted award, Paris by Shane Eagle featuring the wonder kid Nasty C, is also in the running. 

Local artists have grown by leaps and bounds. Collaborations are exciting and spell growth. They’ve broadened the artistic landscape, cultural output and spread of wealth. The industry is richer for all the creative outpouring and love in the studio that culminate in popular hits.

Artists have worked hard, keeping people’s spirits up during these trying times. It’s time to enjoy a well deserved pat on the back. Nominations already mean they are among the best in the land.
