LIV Golf’s long-anticipated South African debut delivered more than just elite competition — it brought spectacle, scale and a distinctly modern twist to the sport at Steyn City.

Set within the sprawling luxury estate founded by the late billionaire Douw Steyn, the tournament unfolded at the Jack Nicklaus-designed course, transforming the tranquil setting into a vibrant arena of sport, music and entertainment.

For traditional golf followers, the experience marked a sharp departure from convention. LIV’s format — 54 holes, no cuts and a three-day run — was matched by an atmosphere more akin to a festival than a classic tournament, with music, fan interaction and a relaxed player-gallery dynamic defining the event.

Moments of spontaneity captured the mood. American star Bryson DeChambeau engaged freely with fans mid-round, posing for selfies and embracing the crowd’s energy — a far cry from the reserved etiquette typically associated with the sport.

South Africa’s Dean Burmester added a patriotic touch, donning a Bafana Bafana jersey during play in a gesture that resonated with local supporters and reinforced the tournament’s crossover appeal between sporting codes.

The field itself was stacked with global talent. Major champions including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia shared the fairways with South African stars Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, underlining the event’s international stature.

On the course, DeChambeau delivered a commanding performance, finishing at 20-under-par to claim the individual title and a $4 million prize. His Crushers GC team edged the team competition by a single stroke, securing a multimillion-dollar payout.

Off the course, the numbers told their own story. With attendance surpassing 90,000 and weekend tickets sold out, the event ranked among LIV Golf’s best-attended tournaments globally — a significant achievement for its first outing in the country.

The tournament also drew political and cultural attention. President Cyril Ramaphosa attended the final day, while Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie framed the event as a powerful blend of sport, tourism and economic activity, with visitor spending estimated in the hundreds of millions of rand.

Local vendors, hospitality operators and entertainers were among the beneficiaries, with performances from global and homegrown acts — including Black Coffee, Calvin Harris and GoldFish — reinforcing the event’s positioning as a lifestyle experience rather than a traditional sporting fixture.

For DeChambeau, the verdict was unequivocal: “South Africa was unbelievable… the best LIV Golf event we have ever had.”

With organisers confirming a return in April 2027 — and early ticket demand already surging — LIV Golf’s debut has set a high benchmark, signalling both the country’s appetite for global sporting events and the evolving future of golf as entertainment.
