Truly, Covid has imposed a new normal on humanity. So, it was no surprise when Joy of Jazz took the popular music event to the Sandton Drive-Inn. Jazz lovers had to be content clicking fingers, bobbing their heads to the beat and singing along to music blaring from the drive-inn speakers attached to their cars. Artists’ images were streamed via the drive-inn cinema’s giant screen while live performances wowed aficionados under the screen.

Elsewhere, Metro fm celebrated their 35 years’ anniversary with a mother-of-all parties at the Altitude Beach restaurant in Fourways, Joburg. At the ritzy affair, DJs and business associates left their inhibitions at the door to get down like there’s no tomorrow. Surely Metro fm legends like the late Boogie Harry Cohen and Grant Shakoane, who were pioneers and now ancestors of this lively station, must have smiled upon the milestone event from the yonder.

In the northern suburbs of Joburg, ANC stalwart the late Winnie Nomzamo Madikizela-Mandela was remembered on her birthday at the weekend. Her eldest ambassador daughter, Zenani, flew in from abroad to attend the occasion, which was held at the Fourways Memorial Park. Winnie’s grave and that of her grand-daughter were cleaned and adorned with fresh flowers. Celebrations followed at Lilly’s Farm in Rivonia.- Gugu Sibiya
