South African amapiano giants DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small have released an additional allocation of tickets for Scorpion Kings Live: A Family Affair at FNB Stadium after demand shattered local music industry records.

Organisers at iM4 Agency confirmed that more than 500 000 fans attempted to secure tickets when sales opened on May 5, making it the largest ticketing queue ever recorded in South Africa for any artist, local or international.

Within hours, over 50 000 tickets had already been sold — matching the attendance of last year’s sold-out Scorpion Kings Live with Friends concert at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

The newly released tickets, initially reserved for fans paid during mid-month and month-end salary cycles, were made available on Wednesday evening following an Instagram Live session where the duo engaged directly with supporters.

“We see the demand, we see the fans asking, and we want to know from you — do we release more today at 5pm or later?” DJ Maphorisa asked fans during the livestream.

What is unfolding around the Scorpion Kings is rapidly becoming more than a concert build-up. It is emerging as a defining cultural moment for amapiano — a genre that has evolved from township soundtracks into one of South Africa’s most powerful musical exports.

Blending the spirit of kwaito, deep house, gqom and jazz-infused rhythms, amapiano has become a unifying national sound cutting across generations and backgrounds.

Its appeal lies in both familiarity and reinvention: music equally capable of filling nightclubs, taxis, family gatherings and stadiums.

The scale of the upcoming event has also revived comparisons with Cassper Nyovest, who made history in 2017 by becoming the first South African artist to fill FNB Stadium through his groundbreaking #FillUpFNBStadium concert.

But, while Cassper proved that a local artist could command a stadium audience, the Scorpion Kings are now attempting to push the ceiling even higher through the collective power of amapiano culture itself. Organisers are targeting attendance figures exceeding 80 000 fans — a number that could establish a new benchmark for a South African live music event.

Scheduled for September this year at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, Scorpion Kings Live: A Family Affair is shaping up as one of the biggest entertainment events South Africa has seen in recent years.

Tickets are available through Webtickets, as well as Pick n Pay and Boxer stores nationwide.
