The University of Johannesburg Choir is set to bring the world of choral music to Johannesburg through a major International Concert Series featuring celebrated ensembles from Switzerland, France and the United States.
Running from May 9 to 23, the concert series will see performances staged at Melville Kruisgemeente, Aan Die Berg NG Kerk, Fountainebleau Community Church and Domus Dei, offering audiences an opportunity to experience a rich blend of African, European, Gospel and sacred choral traditions. The programme will feature performances by the award-winning UJ Choir alongside Switzerland’s Knabenkantorei Basel, France’s Le Choeur du Petit Conservatoire de l’Est, as well as the Morgan State University Choir and Hendricks Chapel Choir from the United States.
Organisers said each concert will present a distinct musical experience, shaped by the unique repertoire, vocal style and artistic traditions of the participating ensembles.
The UJ Choir, made up of 80 students from disciplines outside music, has built a reputation for artistic innovation and excellence in both Western and African choral repertoire. The choir has earned multiple accolades and is regarded as one of South Africa’s leading university choirs.
Among the international guests is Knabenkantorei Basel, one of Europe’s historic boys’ choirs dating back to 1927, known for performances ranging from Renaissance a cappella works to contemporary choral compositions. France’s Le Choeur du Petit Conservatoire de l’Est is recognised for its adventurous and eclectic repertoire blending traditional European techniques with expressive modern influences.
The Morgan State University Choir, one of America’s celebrated collegiate ensembles, is internationally respected for its interpretation of classical music, Gospel and spirituals rooted in African-American heritage. Hendricks Chapel Choir is renowned for its sacred and liturgical music tradition, combining classical works with contemporary spiritual repertoire.
Hosted by the UJ Arts & Culture faculty, the concert series aligns with the university’s vision of strengthening cultural exchange through African and international artistic collaboration.
