EIGHT IS (NOT) ENOUGH

Perennial champions:  Sundowns joins the pantheon of world Super Clubs which have won the league more than any other in their respective countries

For us down here in Mzansi its like been going on forever. Eight consecutive PSL league title wins and there seems ain’t nothing stopping them.

The Yellow Nation, as Mamelodi Sundowns are known, clinched the inaugural Betway Premiership  title following their 3-0 victory over Chippa United on Wednesday night at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London, marking a straight eight consecutive win of  the coveted trophy.

Interestingly, the South African premier league is one of the best leagues in Africa, as the league boast of some of the best stadiums on the continent, and was ranked the 7th best league in Africa based on the number of points amassed in CAF’s inter-clubs competition since February, 2019, according to footballdatabase.com and it was rated the 6th best league in Africa according to the CAF 5- Year Ranking system.

The League boasts of some of the best teams in the continent, given the fact that four South African teams were part of the top 25 teams in Africa and according to an article by sokkaa.com, the previous ABSA Premiership valuation stood at £130.91 million ( R3 143 764 377 South African Rand).

Looking closely at the SA football money league, Sundowns tops the takings having amassed almost R234, 5-millon following their qualifying for the FIFA Club World Cup, winning the Betway Premiership and as semi-finalists in the CAF Champions League.

Orlando Pirates are not far off with R29-million in the  pocket for their efforts in the CAF Champions League, Nedbank Cup runners-up, and MTN 8 winners. Pirates are still to be rewarded for what seems a sure second-position in the Betway League.

The long-suffering Kaizer Chiefs will also be smiling to the bank with a whooping R8-2 for winning the Nedbank Bank.

Every football fan believes their club are the best but only a few have any proof they can claim football’s holy grail – silverware.

By winning the Betway Premiership, Sundowns joins the pantheon of world clubs that have the busiest trophy cabinets having amassed most consecutive league titles in recent times.

These include Germany’s Bayern Munich with 11 consecutive Bundesliga league titles from 2013-2023. Following closely is Italian powerhouse Juventus with nine consecutive Serie A league titles from 2012-2020. Sundowns will also be proud of having pipped Lyon of France to the tally, the latter with seven Ligue 1 consecutive title wins from 2002-2008. Both Bayern Munich and Juventus feature in the forthcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the USA where they may likely lock horns with Bafana Ba Style as the tournament progresses.

Yet, it is the monotony of one club winning the league consistently that is of more concern to all soccer-loving South Africans.

As the 2024/25 seasons winds down, fans expect the likes of perennial runner-ups like Pirates, Chiefs, and even Stellies, to up their game next season to dethrone Sundowns’s of their dictatorship of the league.

To end off the season in grand-style, Sundowns are giving the Yellow Nation a chance to win a brand new car at their final home game of the season!

The winner will be selected at random when they take on Magesi

at the Loftus Versfeld stadium with Magesi players to perform the mandatory guard-of-honour for the league winners before the match.

All rise for the champs!!

Kick-off 5-30pm
