BLOEMFONTEIN — Police have launched a manhunt after twin brothers who owned Ekhayeni Lounge Bar were shot dead inside their vehicle in Bochabela, Bloemfontein, on Wednesday morning.

Kegomodicoe Lekone and his brother, Keabecoe Lekone, both 52, were killed while sitting in a charcoal-coloured Ford Ranger at the gate of premises in Ramatsoele Street.

According to police, Mangaung Police Station received a report of a shooting in progress through radio control at about 08h51. Officers on patrol responded and arrived at approximately 09h00.

Both brothers had sustained gunshot wounds and were declared dead at the scene by ER24 paramedics. Kegomodicoe was identified as the driver and Keabecoe as the passenger.

“Both the driver and the passenger suffered gunshot wounds,” police said.

A witness who was upstairs inside a double-storey building on the premises told police he heard gunshots and rushed outside to investigate.

He allegedly saw a man running towards a white Chevrolet Aveo hatchback, which then sped away. The witness could not establish whether the man was carrying anything.

Police said there were possibly two other occupants already inside the getaway vehicle.

The Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes, Murder and Robbery Unit is pursuing the suspects. Two murder cases have been opened at Mangaung Police Station.

The supplied police statement did not disclose a motive or announce any arrests.

The brothers had previously featured in court proceedings. According to contemporaneous reporting by Sowetan, they were each sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment in October 2012 after being convicted of fraud and money laundering involving the Mangaung municipality. Their bail was extended while they sought to challenge their convictions and sentences.

In a separate matter, NovaNews reports that the twins were previously acquitted in the case concerning the 2008 murder of Lehlohonolo Seqhee, who served as a bodyguard to then Free State police, roads and transport MEC Seiso Mohai.

The police statement establishes no connection between those earlier cases and Wednesday’s killings.

Anyone with information that could help identify or locate the suspects is urged to contact Colonel Msokoli Bolsick on 082 466 8530.

Information can also be reported at the nearest police station, submitted through the MySAPS app, or provided to Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
