SUREFIRE: Gqeberha to be lit this Saturday at the jazzy evening
By Gugu Sibiya
Disgruntled jazz aficionados were upset when their favourite artists couldn’t perform at the Ebubeleni Festival in December 2021. Now that they are honouring their date with the Evening of Jazz at the Sun Boardwalk on June 25, and surelymusic lovers will be thrilled at the news.
Guitarist and vocalist Selaelo Selota, trumpeter Mandisi Dyantyis amd baritone Dumza Maswana are the trio that is going to heat things up at the cool jazzy evening.
Selota is a musician who has more than proved himself in the industry. Boasting a Midas touch, the muso has produced platinum sellers, award winners, anthem sing-alongs that remain on high rotation long after release.
Afro-soul jazz dynamo Dyantyis dropped his his Afro-soul and jazz-ladden debut offering Somandla, in 2019. The industry turned it into the gift that keeps on giving. Nominated for a SAMA Award’s Best Jazz Album category, he didn’t take it home or the Mzantsi Jazz Awards as well as the Afrima Awards, but the recognition set his career on a winning trail. He has been gigging at prestigious fests and events like the Summer Silo Concerts, Grahamstown Jazz Festival and the J&B Met in between getting down at sold-out events.
His distinctive baritone voice is what has introduced Maswana into the industry. His performances successfully fuse traditional, spiritual, soul and jazz sounds, never stop the crowds from wallowing in the grips of ecstatic frenzy, begging for more. It’s that magic he’s bringing to the evening in Gqeberha.
