CALLIES TO CUT CANE CUTTERS TO SHREDS
ROMANS ON THE ATTACK: No easy ride for Uthongathi as they face a Tshwane outfit gone twelve matches without a loss
By Masoja Cele
Struggling Uthongani FC will feel the wrath of the fast improving Pretoria Callies when they engage in the Motsepe Foundation Championship encounter scheduled for the Princess Magogo Stadium, Durban, on Sunday.
Kick off 15hr00. Uthongathi are struggling to replicate the performance that catapulted them into a formidable side they were last season. The “Cane Cutters” are blowing hot and cold dropping crucial points when least expected.
Last weekend the suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Hungry Lions the results that further pushed them lower on the table. Currently, they are lying seventh on the log standings. Things started to crumble early in the season when there were coaching musical chairs at the team. At the beginning of the 2022/23 campaign Uthongathi head coach Papi Zothwane quit the team and joinPolokwane City. As the adage suggest, there is no place like home, the likeable mentor re-joined his employers in early November.
Since his return Zothwane has seen fourteen matches winning five, losing seven and drawing two of the matches. It seems the former Lamontville Golden Arrows and Mamelodi Sundows midfielder is working on helping the team to sustain its stay in the division and maybe push for DStv Premiership challenge in the next campaign. The KZN outfit has enough playing personnel to clinch the match.
In recent time Uthongathi enlisted the services of the former Arrows goalkeeper Maximilian Mbaeva to try and stabilise their last line of defence. The former Namibian international shot stopper came with massive experience starring for Arrows and his home country national team. Mbaeva will be ably guarded by the defensive partnership of the composed Xolani Slawula and the gangling Falakhe Tshanini. Upfront, the Cane Cutters will pin their hopes on their lively talisman Mfanafuthi Mkhize to torment the opposition shot stopper.
However, facing Callies won’t be an easy ride for Uthongathi. The Tshwane ensemble are currently cruising the crest of waves. They have gone twelve matches without a loss. At some stage The Romans were punted as the whipping boys in championship league. But, after the appointment of former Pitso Mosimane’s assistant at SuperSport United Kwanele Kopo, the team fortunes changed for the better. The pint size Kopo have brought in new lease of life to the team. He is also the Assistant coach to the South Africa under 23 national team.
