Communities across Gauteng are being urged to act quickly as the deadline for nominations to the 11th Annual Vita Basadi Awards draws near.

The Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL) has reminded residents that they have until June 30 to nominate outstanding women and girls who are making a meaningful difference in their communities through leadership, service, education, public safety and social upliftment.

Organisers say the awards provide a platform to honour often-unsung heroes whose contributions help strengthen communities across the province.

The call comes as the GPL intensifies efforts to identify women whose dedication and selfless service have positively impacted the lives of others. From educators and community activists to emergency service personnel and young leaders, the awards seek to celebrate those who continue to inspire change and empower others despite limited recognition.

The awards, which form part of the GPL’s annual Women’s Month programme, recognise women who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, service, compassion and commitment to uplifting their communities.

Residents are encouraged to nominate women who work tirelessly to support others, often without recognition or reward. Nominees may come from all walks of life and can include women of all ages, cultural backgrounds, faiths, abilities and sexual orientations.

To submit a nomination, members of the public must provide the nominee’s name together with a 300-word motivation explaining the impact of her work and why she deserves recognition. Supporting documents may also be submitted through online platforms such as Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox or iCloud.

This year’s awards introduce two new categories aimed at recognising excellence in education. The Innovative Educator Award will honour a science teacher who uses creative methods to inspire learners, while the Community Builder Award will celebrate an educator who has made a significant contribution to the academic growth and development of learners.

Every community has a woman whose selfless service changes lives. The Vita Basadi Awards offer Gauteng residents an opportunity to ensure those contributions do not go unnoticed…

Other categories continue to recognise women making outstanding contributions in various sectors. The Young Dignitary Award is open to girls in primary and secondary schools, with nominations requiring verification from their schools. The Guardian Award recognises women serving as security guards, police officers, military personnel, firefighters, lifeguards and emergency service workers.

The GPL’s Multi-Party Women’s Caucus oversees the awards, which seek to spotlight women whose efforts contribute to stronger, more caring and inclusive communities.

Gauteng Legislature Speaker Honourable Morakane Mosupyoe will host the awards ceremony in August, where winners will be honoured for their achievements and service.

Nominations close on June 30.

Organisers say the awards are an opportunity for communities to celebrate women whose dedication, resilience and leadership continue to inspire positive change across Gauteng.
