Chiefs-Zamalek Group D Showdown

KNIFE-EDGE: AmaKhosi need just a point in Cairo to seal top spot in Group D — but defeat could drag them into a dramatic three-way tie as the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup group stage reaches its climax.

By WSAM Sports Reporter

The TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup 2025/26 group stage reaches a thrilling conclusion this weekend, with four of the eight quarter-final places still up for grabs and permutations that could go down to goal difference — or even the drawing of lots.

For South African fans, all eyes will be on Kaizer Chiefs, who lead Group D on 10 points (+2) but face a daunting away assignment against Egyptian giants Zamalek (8 points, +1) in Cairo.

A draw will be enough to send AmaKhosi into the quarter-finals as group winners. But defeat would throw the group wide open.

Zamalek must win to stay alive. Meanwhile, Al Masry (7 points, +0) host already-eliminated ZESCO United (3 points, -3) and are poised to capitalise.

If Chiefs lose and Masry win, Zamalek would top the group on 11 points, while Chiefs and Masry would both finish on 10. With their head-to-head record level after 2–1 home wins for each side, qualification could be decided on goal difference — where Chiefs currently hold the edge (+2 to Masry’s 0) — or even goals scored.

In extreme circumstances, the final quarter-final place could be determined by away goals across all group matches — and if still tied, by the drawing of lots.

It is a knife-edge scenario befitting a dramatic final round.

Other Fixtures

Group A has already confirmed its two quarter-finalists, but top spot remains at stake. USM Alger (13 points, +5) host Morocco’s Olympic Safi (12, +3), with a draw enough for the Algerians to secure a seeded position in the last-eight draw.

In Group B, three-time champions Wydad Casablanca (12, +5) host Tanzania’s Azam (9, 0), while Maniema Union (9, +2) are expected to claim maximum points against eliminated Nairobi United (0, -7).

Should Azam win in Casablanca and Maniema triumph, three teams would finish level on 12 points — triggering a head-to-head mini-league to determine the top two.

Group C has its qualifiers confirmed but not its order. CR Belouizdad (12, +5) need only a draw against AS Otoho (9, +5) to finish first. However, Otoho’s emphatic 4–1 win in the reverse fixture is a reminder that nothing is guaranteed.

South Africa’s Stellenbosch FC and Tanzania’s Singida Black Stars will play for pride and to avoid finishing bottom.

Final Whistle Stakes

With quarter-final seedings determined first by head-to-head results, then goal difference and goals scored, every goal this weekend carries enormous weight.

For Chiefs, the equation is simple on paper: avoid defeat and advance.

On the pitch in Cairo, however, nothing about this final chapter promises to be simple.
