After being re-elected President of South Africa for a second successive term this week, Cyril Ramaphosa exuded confidence in the formation of a Government of National Unity (GNU) which he described as a new era and a rising tide that had to be met with optimism and hope.
The people have spoken and their will shall be done. And nothing will distract the GNU in its new journey of working together to serve and advance the interests of all South Africans.
While there are those who have cast doubt over this new dispensation, Ramaphosa and all those political leaders who have joined the ANC in the GNU, should be encouraged and supported in this difficult mission of reviving the country which has, for almost thirty years, being trapped in a vicious circle of corruption, poverty, a stagnant economy, unemployment and high levels of crime. Millions of South Africans who cast their votes in the recent general elections have given all the contesting political parties a mandate to work together to attend to these troubling issues that they had continually raised for years without any positive results. The electorate have warned political party leaders to stop bickering and being selfish and to start serving the people who voted them into power.
As he ponders over the appointment of his new Cabinet, Ramaphosa , who has promised to build a government that is capable and honest, is urged to appoint qualified people in these ministerial positions. People who are prepared to serve the South African populace with honour and dignity and to listen to their wishes. It must be a government of the people, for the people and by the people.
We also hope that these ministers will hit the ground running in addressing the most serious issues that included unemployment, corruption, crime and education and violence against women and children amongst others. They must reject any attempt to distract them from this daunting task.
The success to this mission will mostly depend on trust, honesty and action amongst all the parties involved. They must not be deterred by the prophets of doom whose wish it is to see this GNU collapsing before it achieves its goals. Nothing however, is impossible.
Those political leaders serving in the GNU should not be intimidated by those whose only contribution towards the building of a better South Africa, is to criticize from a distance and offer nothing in return.
There is no room for such people at the moment. South Africa needs support from all its citizens for revival. Several influential foreign countries have given this GNU their blessings. The future of this country depends on unity amongst all political leaders to rescue it from the brink of total disaster.
There is no room for failure. As the saying goes, there is no secret to success. It is connected with action which included preparation, hard work and learning from failure.
‘’ There is nothing nobler than risking your life for your country.’’
