The Nelson Mandela Foundation has launched the Mandela Legacy Sporting Series, a nationwide initiative aimed at mobilising thousands of South Africans through sport in honour of the enduring legacy of former president Nelson Mandela.
The initiative, unveiled at a media launch held at Sanctuary Mandela in Houghton, Johannesburg, was attended by stakeholders, sporting partners and members of the media.
Launched ahead of Nelson Mandela International Day under the theme, “It is still in our hands to combat poverty and inequality”, the four-event series is intended to drive social impact, encourage active citizenship and unite communities through participation in sport.
The campaign also coincides with significant milestones linked to Mandela’s life and legacy, including 27 years since the establishment of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, 27 years since he stepped down as South Africa’s first democratically elected president, and the 27 years he spent imprisoned during the struggle against apartheid.
According to the Foundation, the series seeks to build on years of sporting initiatives that have brought together walkers, runners, cyclists and supporters in campaigns rooted in solidarity, remembrance and social change.
The Mandela Legacy Sporting Series will begin with the Mandela Day Walk & Run in Johannesburg on July 19, followed by the Legacy Ride4Hope cycling tour from Maputo in Mozambique to Howick in KwaZulu-Natal from September 2 to 5. The newly introduced Nelson Mandela Marathon Cape Town is scheduled for October 18, while the series will conclude with the Mandela Remembrance Walk & Run in Tshwane on December 5.
Speaking at the launch, Nelson Mandela Foundation CEO Dr Mbongiseni Buthelezi described the initiative as more than just a collection of sporting events.
“The Mandela Legacy Sporting Series brings together established moments of participation and impact under one platform, while creating new opportunities to mobilise people around active citizenship, solidarity, and social justice,” he said.
The launch was attended by Mandela’s grandson, Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, while veteran broadcaster Robert Marawa served as programme director. Representatives linked to the four events also outlined plans for participation and community engagement.
Funds raised through the series will support programmes aligned with the Foundation’s mission of promoting social justice, dialogue and community upliftment. Organisers said the platform is expected to expand in future through new partnerships and additional initiatives.
The series is open to participants of all ages and fitness levels, with registrations expected to open soon.
