The countdown to South Africa’s biggest celebration of musical excellence has officially begun, with the South African Music Awards (SAMA32) set to announce this year’s nominees on 25 June ahead of the highly anticipated awards ceremony in August.
The nomination reveal will take place through a hybrid event, bringing together music industry leaders, artists, media representatives, stakeholders and fans from across the country. The announcement will recognise the artists, producers, composers, albums and industry professionals who have distinguished themselves through exceptional achievements during the awards eligibility period.
This year’s edition, themed the “Homecoming Edition”, marks the return of the prestigious awards to the North West Province, a move organisers say is designed to celebrate the region’s rich cultural heritage while highlighting the role of music in driving economic growth, tourism and social cohesion.
The main awards ceremony will take place on 15 August in the North West Province through a partnership involving the North West Department of Arts, Culture, Sports and Recreation, South African Tourism, the North West Department of Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, SAMPRA, SAMRO, RAV and the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA).
According to SAMA spokesperson Unathi Gwija, the Homecoming Edition is about more than recognising musical excellence.
“The Homecoming Edition represents more than an awards ceremony; it is a celebration of South African creativity, resilience and innovation.
By returning to the North West Province, we are creating opportunities to showcase the region’s tourism attractions, cultural assets and economic potential, while honouring the remarkable achievements of our musicians,” said Gwija.
For more than three decades, the SAMAs have remained the country’s premier platform for recognising excellence across the recording industry, honouring artists whose work continues to shape South Africa’s cultural identity and strengthen its global reputation.
Organisers believe the partnership with the North West Province aligns with broader efforts to position music and cultural events as powerful drivers of local economic development, destination marketing, job creation and community pride.
The nomination announcement on 25 June is expected to generate excitement across the industry as artists and fans await confirmation of who will compete for the coveted awards.
