Pretoria-raised rapper Tyson Sybateli has confirmed that his highly anticipated studio album, Amehlo, will be released on September 22.
The album’s title translates to “eyes” in isiZulu, signalling a project concerned with awareness, perception and reflection.
Developed over four years, Amehlo expands Sybateli’s signature storytelling into an immersive conceptual world exploring surveillance culture, digital dependency and the systems shaping modern life.
Blending hip-hop with alternative and punk-rock influences, the album challenges listeners to question the realities they navigate daily while remaining firmly rooted in Sybateli’s personal journey. At the centre of the project is a fictional corporate universe reflecting today’s algorithm-driven society, in which advertising, technology and constant observation have become embedded in everyday life.
Despite its ambitious scope, the album remains deeply human, balancing social commentary with introspective reflections on ambition, identity, resilience and freedom.
“Amehlo became my way of processing the world around me,” Sybateli says. “It’s a reflection of the times we’re living in, but it’s also deeply personal.
“Every song is another piece of that conversation, and I’m looking forward to finally sharing it with listeners. I hope people find pieces of themselves in these stories and leave with a different perspective from when they first pressed play.”
Sybateli has established himself as one of South Africa’s most respected lyricists, earning acclaim for projects including SYBA, Dulcé, Eve, Home and Present.
Marking the beginning of a new creative era, Amehlo features a carefully selected line-up of collaborators, including Marcus Harvey, Filah Lah Lah, Buzzi Lee, Thato Saul and Tron Pyre. Their contributions broaden the album’s sonic landscape while keeping Sybateli’s storytelling at its heart.
With Amehlo, the rapper continues to stretch the boundaries of his artistry without abandoning the honest, personal storytelling that has defined his work.
More than a collection of songs, the album reflects his evolution as a musician and creative visionary. It invites listeners into a world that examines the forces shaping modern existence while remaining grounded in intimate human experiences.
The album is now available to pre-save ahead of its release on Tuesday, September 22. Pre-save: awal.ffm.to/amehlo
