DISRUPTION:  The soon-to-launch Changan UNI-S is designed to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with established players and rock the current status quo

By Ali Mphaki

Changan is making a clear statement and this is no April Fool’s joke.

The Chinese automaker has no intention of competing on the fringes as it enters the most contested mid-size SUV segment, where established leaders rule the roost and emerging brands fight for visibility and buyers scrutinise every detail.

No doubt this segment is not for the faint-hearted, yet, this is exactly where the Changan UNI-S is choosing to compete.

What the Chinese automaker wants us to know, is that they are doing this not quietly. Not cautiously. But deliberately.

The globally acclaimed UNI-S, rather than competing on price alone, with its forthcoming three UNI-S variants position themselves as serious contenders through engineering capability and unprecedented advanced technology.

For many brands, the safe strategy would be to enter this space with aggressive pricing and value-led messaging. Compete on affordability. Blend in. Hope for attention.

The Changan UNI-S is taking a different approach.

It enters the segment not as an alternative, but as the strongest contender of 2026. The manufacturer tells us this is not about offering “good enough for the price.” It is about completely challenging expectations of what buyers should expect at this level – and then delivering on that.

A closer look at the UNI-S show it takes the segment rule book and throws it out of the window.

The UNI-S boasts a futuristic exterior characterized by sharp lines, a prominent front grille, and sleek LED headlamps. The aerodynamic profile enhances its sporty appearance while providing functional benefits, such as improved efficiency. With a variety of vibrant color options, it stands out in the crowded crossover segment.

The swooping roofline and aggressive front grille give it genuine coupe-SUV proportions, It stands on 20-inch alloy wheels..

Expect intelligent adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, front and rear collision warning, blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic parking and a 540° panoramic camera system – and the intention becomes clear:  With a panoramic sunroof that closes when rain is sensed, to side mirrors that tilt down for better visibility when reversing, drivers are going to be spoilt with premium comfort features usually reserved for bigger – and more expensive –  traditional SUV’s. An electric tailgate, a mobile phone Bluetooth key and a 12.8-inch infotainment display with 8 speakers.

A fully digital cockpit with dual 12.3-inch displays welcomes you on board an interior with materials that feel genuinely upmarket, offered with leather-appointed seats and soft-touch surfaces dominating the cabin. Rear passengers also get decent space despite the sloping roofline, though taller adults might find headroom tight.

Beneath the surface, the UNI-S arrives with a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 138kW and 300Nm of torque which positions it among the most capable vehicles in its class.

The power is channeled through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to the front wheels, delivering claimed performance figures that should give its rivals some sleepless nights.

To compliment the “Blue Whale” power train, the UNI-S sports a multi-link independent rear suspension – a feature often reserved for more premium SUV’s – which delivers enhanced stability and ride composure.

The infotainment system supports both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, while wireless charging keeps your phone topped up.

Safety equipment includes six airbags, electronic stability control, and automatic emergency braking. These features help justify the premium positioning against more established brands in the segment.

Fuel consumption is claimed at 6.8 litres per 100km.

Priced at R699,900, it is more affordable than its rivals which include the Mercedes-GLC Coupe and the BMW X4.

Changan provides a comprehensive five-year or 150,000km warranty on the UNI-S, along with a five-year service plan for added peace of mind.

Arrival is set for April 2026.
