LEGEND: The ardent Zion Christian Church warrior and melodic gospel singer has sung his last note
By Gugu Sibiya
Ever since news of gospel singer Solly “Moholo” Molokoane (65)’s passing broke out, fellow artists and those who knew him well, have repeatedly reminisced about what a wonderful and gentle soul he was.
The charismatic gospel music singer collapsed in Botswana, where he went to launch his brand new album. After receiving medical attention in that country, he was transferred to a local hospital. Uncertain and difficult days later, he succumbed to his illness, leaving a distraught loyal base behind.
Moholo’s entry in the gospel arena could be likened to that of Daniel entering a lion’s den. He was excited at the breakthrough of a recording deal, but nervous at the possibility of rejection by a pop-inclined marketplace.
It was at a time when religious groups that didn’t conform to norms of traditional churches were looked down upon. On a mission, he fused rhythm with catchy lyrics, thereby adding pizzazz to boring ZCC hymns. His melodic voice carried these eclectic works of art. That was to be, not just a breakthrough, but a combination of charm and connection he had with his enthralled audience.
Another ace up his sleeve was his ability to sing about bread and butter issues in a relatable manner – from serious, emotive issues to educational and awareness themes that were delivered in a humorous way. Aside from truckloads of humour, he was gentle and sensitive. Hence his celebratory performances at packed venues, always elicited sing-alongs. The queen of gospel music, the inimitable Rebecca Malope expressed sadness at Moholo’s passing.
“I knew him as a gifted gospel music artist. We were at the same recording company and so met at the office or fests we worked at. What always grabbed my attention is how polite and respectful he was. Forever cordial, you don’t encounter many gentlemen like him anymore.
My prayer is that he’s in a better place now,” she says, offering condolences to family and friends. There’s no doubt about Moholo’s massive impact on the genre, putting it out there doggedly, making it fashionable and accessible to people across denominations.
An activist who spoke through his music and actions, Moholo gave of his time and shared whatever he could with the needy. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
