Mamelodi Sundowns held their nerve in hostile territory to headline a dramatic weekend of TotalEnergies CAF Champions League quarter-final action, as four gripping ties delivered shocks, late goals and shifting power across African club football.
Despite a 2-0 defeat to Stade Malien in Bamako, Sundowns advanced 3-2 on aggregate, surviving a relentless onslaught to book a fourth consecutive semi-final appearance and reaffirm their status as one of the continent’s most consistent forces.
The South African champions were rocked early, conceding inside the opening minute before falling further behind just before half-time. With momentum firmly against them and reduced to ten men late on, Sundowns were forced into a backs-to-the-wall defensive effort. But crucially, their dominant first-leg performance proved decisive, allowing them to weather the storm and progress.
Their resilience now sets up a semi-final clash against Tunisia’s Esperance, who produced one of the standout results of the round by eliminating record champions Al Ahly in Cairo.
Esperance overturned an early deficit to claim a thrilling 3-2 victory on the night and a 4-2 aggregate win, silencing the Cairo International Stadium. After absorbing sustained pressure in the first half, the Tunisian side seized control after the break, scoring twice before delivering a dramatic stoppage-time winner to complete a statement victory.
While Sundowns survived, Egypt’s continental heavyweights endured a weekend to forget.
Defending champions Pyramids FC were also sent crashing out, beaten 2-1 at home by Morocco’s FAR Rabat, who sealed a 3-2 aggregate triumph.
FAR Rabat struck early to seize control of the tie and doubled their advantage after the break, showcasing tactical discipline and clinical execution. Although Pyramids briefly reignited hope through Fiston Mayele’s goal, the Moroccan side held firm under pressure to end the title holders’ reign and advance with authority.
Their reward is a semi-final showdown against compatriots RS Berkane, ensuring a Moroccan finalist in this year’s competition.
Berkane booked their place in the last four in equally dramatic fashion, scoring deep into stoppage time to edge Al-Hilal 1-0 and secure a 2-1 aggregate victory.
In a tense and tightly contested encounter played in Kigali, both sides struggled to find a breakthrough until late drama unfolded. After a missed penalty and a disallowed goal earlier in the second half, Berkane struck the decisive blow in the 93rd minute, with Munir Chouiar converting to spark wild celebrations and seal a historic semi-final appearance.
The result not only underlined Berkane’s growing stature but also confirmed Morocco’s dominance on one side of the draw, with two clubs now guaranteed a place in the final.
Taken together, the quarter-finals delivered a compelling narrative of resilience, shifting momentum and the fine margins that define knockout football.
For Sundowns, survival may not have been pretty — but it was enough. And in a competition where experience often proves decisive, their ability to withstand pressure could yet carry them all the way.
As the tournament moves into the semi-finals, the stage is set for a clash of contrasting forces: Sundowns’ composure against Esperance’s momentum, and a guaranteed North African derby between FAR Rabat and Berkane for a place in the final.
