COG-IN-THE-WHEEL: Volkswagen Group Africa has appointed energy economist Dr Lungile Mashele as a non-executive director, strengthening the company’s sustainability and energy expertise at board level.

Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) has announced the appointment of Dr Lungile Mashele as a non-executive director to its Board of Management.
The appointment took effect on May 1. “Sustainability is a priority for us at Volkswagen Group Africa, and for this reason we are especially excited to welcome Dr Mashele to our Board,” said Martina Biene, chairperson and managing director of VWGA.
“Her appointment, experience and insights will be invaluable to our company, both in terms of energy and business, and we look forward to working with her,” added Biene.
She is the second active non-executive director, joining Yolanda Cuba who has served on the Board since June 2024.
Mashele is an accomplished energy economist with over 15 years of experience across the energy value chain, including renewable energy, gas, coal, nuclear and hydro energy projects across the African continent. She currently serves as an advisor to the Minister of Energy and Electricity, a non-executive director at the National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA), and an Energy and Infrastructure specialist at the Public Investment Corporation (PIC).
Mashele has dedicated herself to the study of energy and business topics, with a Master’s Degree in Energy Studies, a B Com Degree in Economics and Econometrics, and most recently, a PhD in Engineering Management. – Fullview
